Carrie Underwood has been in tip-top shape from when she appeared on and won season 4 of American Idol to now as a loving and proud mother of two. But, the country music superstar has always worked hard to maintain a slim figure and fit physique.
As she continues to keep up her healthy and active lifestyle, Underwood says her priorities and goals for doing so have shifted.
While speaking to PEOPLE in a recent interview, Underwood, 39, reflected on her mindset in her early 20s and shared how her point of view on health and fitness has changed since then.
“I feel like earlier in my career I was working out more to be a certain size or fit into a certain aesthetic that I thought I wanted to be,” the eight-time Grammy-award winner said of the earlier days of her country music journey. “And now I feel like I work out more to be strong and to have energy and longevity.”
Carrie Underwood Knows The Key To Staying Fit
Underwood is wife to former professional NHL hockey player Mike Fisher and mom to sons Jacob, 3, and Isaiah, 7. On top of that, she’s still touring and releasing music. So it’s not easy to fit the workouts into the daily grind. But the “Hate My Heart” singer knows that the key to maintaining strength, energy, and lean muscle is by living in a way that supports those desires because results don’t happen overnight.
“It really is playing the long game, right?” she says. “I’ve worked out a whole lot and been frustrated because it wasn’t the results I wanted. I feel like now, at this point in my life, you really do learn that it is a lifestyle, it’s balance. It is overall taking care of yourself.”
Underwood Works Out On Tour
Surprisingly, Underwood finds that being out on the road is the best time to get her workouts in. She explains that it’s her time to focus on herself away from her husband and kids.
“When I’m at home, I feel like I’m mom-ing it. I’m doing the laundry, packing the lunches. I’m always cleaning,” Underwood shares. “So when I’m on the road, and I live on a bus or in a hotel room, I’m not having to do all that stuff, so it frees up a little time. My schedule is still very regimented, and there’s all this stuff that I do, but my mornings are a little bit more flexible.”
“It’s surprisingly physical being on stage — there’s a lot of cardio. I’m running around in heels, and I honestly write songs I don’t give myself time to breathe,” she adds of her live shows.

And along with bringing high energy on her tours, Underwood stays in tune with her body and health-driven mindset by teaming up with brands that promote a similar way of life. She is a spokesperson of the all-natural sports drink BODYARMOR, and the owner of a fitness apparel and accessories line called CALIA, which shares a message to “stay the path of leading an active lifestyle.”
Uses The Fit52 App For Fitness
Underwood also has launched a fitness app called Fit52, which she uses while traveling.
“You have to work around a lot,” she adds. “We have an app called fit52 that I’m glad to have in my pocket on my phone. So somebody can kind of tell me what to do with minimal equipment because it depends on what hotel we’re in, or what we have to work with. We just make it happen when it can happen and how it can happen.”
Along with that, Underwood actively engages with her fans on Instagram, sharing videos and photos of how she keeps up with health and wellness.
