Miranda Lambert took the stage at Gulf Coast Jam in Panama City Beach, Florida on Friday (June 2), and she sang Morgan Wallen’s “Thought You Should Know” for the first time ever during her headlining set.

The Texas native paid tribute to Wallen with the heartfelt performance as he was previously set to headline the third day of the festival, however, was forced to bow out due to a six-week doctor-ordered vocal rest.

Miranda Lambert Changed The Lyrics To Reflect Her Own Life

During her performance, Lambert changed the lyrics to reflect her own life.

“Yeah, I know you’ve been worrying ’bout me/ You’ve been losing sleep since ’83,” she sang with a huge smile on her face.

Lambert co-wrote “Thought You Should Know” alongside Wallen and Nicolle Galyon. The song went on to become Wallen’s 8th career No.1 at country radio and Lambert’s first-ever No.1 as a songwriter on a tune that was recorded by another artist.

Lambert Said Wallen Is “A Sweetheart”

During a recent interview with Southern Living’s Biscuits & Jam podcast, Lambert opened up about co-writing the tune.

“[Nicolle] called me the next day and was like, ‘Hey, I have a write with Morgan today and somebody backed out. Do you wanna come?’ And I was like, ‘Sure’,” Lambert recalled.”We had the best day. We sat on her porch and made a couple drinks and just really talked. And I got to know Morgan. He’s a sweetheart. He’s a little East Tennessee boy and a new artist. I try to be there for new artists of any kind because I know the road ahead, and that it can be bumpy.”

The songwriting session was a memorable one for the ACM Triple Crown winner.

“We were just talking about, like, ‘What do you want to write about?’ And he was like, ‘I kinda wanna write a song to my mom ’cause I know she worries about me so much,’” she continued, “And so we did. It was really cool for Morgan to let down his guard and write with two girls about somebody that’s so special to him. I’m glad that he felt comfortable enough to, like, open up to us and let us sort of tell that story for her.”

Lambert Wants To Meet Morgan Wallen’s Mom Lesli

Miranda Lambert also added that she hasn’t met Morgan Wallen’s mom, Lesli Wallen, yet. However, when she does, she admitted that she wants to “give her a hug round her neck, ’cause I’m very proud to be part of a song that’s about her.”

While co-hosting Country Countdown USA alongside Lon Helton earlier this year, Morgan Wallen also chatted about the songwriting session that led to “Thought You Should Know.”

“So, I had the idea for the song and I had the first verse and obviously for my mom, but I wanted a woman’s perspective, you know, for this song just to get that cause I don’t have that, obviously,” Wallen explained. “So I know that Nicole is one of the best female and one of the best songwriters just in general. And then she asked me if I was okay if Miranda joined us and I said, ‘No, no, no.’ *laughs* But yeah, she came in and we wrote this one first.”

Wrote “Three Or Four More Songs That Day”

Wallen then revealed that “Thought You Should Know” isn’t the only song the trio wrote. “Then we wrote three or four more songs that day,” Wallen added.

The East Tennessee native went on to reveal Lambert and Galyon’s reactions when Wallen first introduced his idea for the song to them.

“They were all in, they thought it was great. You know? I think it is not just a sweet song, it’s real. It comes from a very real place. So I think that that’s what they probably liked about it,” Wallen continued. “And they immediately had ideas. They helped me change a couple things that I had already there. And then we wrote the second verse and did some other things, but they were inspired immediately and we got that done pretty quick.”

Lambert’s First-Ever No. 1 As A Songwriter

Miranda Lambert celebrated the exciting milestone with a congratulatory post to Wallen on Instagram.

“Congrats @morganwallen on your number 1 song ‘Thought You Should Know,’” Lambert wrote. ”Proud to be a writer on a song about your mama! This is the first number 1 song I’ve ever had as a writer. We did good that day y’all. Cheers friends. @nicatnitemusic.”

Miranda Lambert is set to perform at the 50th Anniversary of CMA Fest on Friday, June 9.

Meanwhile, Morgan Wallen will resume his One Night At A Time World Tour later this month. The country superstar is set to perform back-to-back nights at Wrigley Field in Chicago on June 22 and June 23. Wrigley Field is an iconic Major League Baseball (MLB) ballpark, which is home to the Chicago Cubs.
