Scotty McCreery shared the music video for his current single, “It Matters To Her,” a song that was inspired by his wife and the mother of his firstborn, Gabi McCreery.
The North Carolina native released the deeply personal music video on Monday (Nov. 14). The clip, which comes in the form of a digital scrapbook, showcases his journey to fatherhood. The music video for the track features never-before-seen footage that the couple recorded got ready to welcome their first child.
From finding out he was going to be a dad, telling his dog Moose that he was going to be a big brother, setting up a nursery in his home with his wife, to welcoming his son, Merrick Avery McCreery, the music video truly captured the McCreerys’ story to becoming first-time parents.
The video also features footage of a photoshoot their dog reading a book called What To Expect When Your Humans Are Expecting as well as clips of various stages of Gabi’s pregnancy and even their baby listening to dad’s music on vinyl in the womb before he was born. The clips were intertwined with footage of McCreery singing the heartfelt tune.
“To me, the video shows off how much of a rock star Gabi was during her pregnancy,” McCreery told PEOPLE. “It also captures how much we both enjoyed getting ready for Avery’s arrival.”
“I wanted to really focus the video on Gabi and our preparations for Avery’s arrival,” McCreery added. “We filmed some of it over the course of several months at home in Raleigh when we were getting the nursery ready. We also filmed some of it at our place at North Topsail Beach. I think you can see in the video how excited we were getting for Avery to get here as well as how amazing Gabi was throughout the entire pregnancy.”
McCreery and his wife welcomed their first child, Merrick Avery McCreery, in late October.
“Next to his mother, he is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen,” McCreery said at the time. “We have been waiting and preparing all year, and now we are so excited to have our little man here with us. We have begun a grand new adventure that will continue for the rest of our lives.”
“Gabi was a total rock star during Avery’s birth. I could not be more proud of her,” he added. “She has already taken to motherhood like a champ. Part of my joy as his Dad is watching Gabi already crush it as his Mom.”
Co-written by McCreery alongside Rhett Akins and Lee Thomas Miller, “It Matters To Her” was influenced by lessons he learned during four years of marriage to his wife Gabi. The song recently charted in the Top 50 on both the Mediabase and Billboard Country Airplay Charts.
On the chorus of the heartfelt tune, McCreery sings: “When you think she don’t see / When you think she don’t care / When you think she don’t notice / What you’re doing there / Every little look / Every single word / Oh, it matters to her.”
During a recent media event, McCreery also shared that he really connected with the tune.
“I’m a lyric guy,” McCreery said during the event. “I’m a story guy, a message guy. And this story was just us sitting back, talking one day, me and Rhett [Akins] and LeeThomas Miller and just being like, ‘Man, you know what I’m learning? It’s just the littlest things. Like if I go downstairs and just empty the dishwasher, and she doesn’t have to tell me to stop watching golf and go do it, it’s a little thing, but it adds up over time. And I’m learning as a young husband, that’s what adds up and makes the difference.’ And I can still work on it. Like, I still shave and leave my beard hair in the sink. And she yells from downstairs like, ‘What the heck?’ But, it’s a cool song to sing.”
The tune, which impacted Country radio on September 12, was also inspired by his love for Brooks & Dunn’s music.
“The coolest one for me is our next single ‘It Matters To Her,’ which if you listen to it, speaking of Brooks & Dunn, it definitely has that inspiration to it and how could you not when I grew up listening to all their albums,” McCreery explained during an interview with Audacy’s Katie Neal. ”This is the [song] where you start playing it and you see the crowd start trying to sing along like they already knew it, but then they realize like ‘oh, I don’t know this song.’”
“It Matters To Her” serves as the third single from McCreery’s latest album, Same Truck, following his chart-topping hits, “You Time” and “Damn Strait.”
On November 18, Scotty McCreery will release a deluxe version of his 2021 album, Same Truck, as well as a vinyl. The expanded edition includes six new tracks. The project will be available on Vinyl, CD, and Digital formats and will feature six additional new songs that weren’t on the original Same Truck album that came out last year. Two of the new bonus tracks from the album, “Nothin’ Right” and “Small Town Story,” are available for streaming now.
“I’ve been sitting on these extra songs that we recorded since we started the Same Truck project and I’ve always wanted to hear this album on vinyl,” he wrote on Twitter.
McCreery, who is currently on “paternity leave,” will return to the road on November 30, where he will play a show in Las Vegas, NV at the Downtown Hoedown on Fremont Street.
Additionally, McCreery won a BMI Award last week for co-writing his No. 1, RIAA Gold-certified hit “You Time,” which was named one of BMI’s Most Performed Country Songs of 2021. His co-writers Frank Rogers and Aaron Eshuis received an ASCAP Award for the song in the same category.
