Morgan Wallen’s new single, “Thought You Should Know,” made a major impact at country radio upon its official add date on Monday (Nov. 7).
The tender song, which plays out like a letter from Wallen to his mother, Lesli, received a whopping 64 first-week adds and 82 overall. The song is the most-added track at country radio this week, ahead of the new King Calaway single, “I’m Feelin’ Good (Steve Miller Band Cover)” and Corey Kent’s “Wild As Her.”
The release of “Thought You Should Know” comes just weeks after Wallen scored his seventh career No.1 with “You Proof.”
Wallen released “Thought You Should Know” on Mother’s Day after teasing it for several months.
“This one’s for you mama. I know it didn’t always seem like those prayers were getting through. I Hope this song is a testament to the fact that they did,” Wallen wrote on social media upon the song’s release. “Still your only damn son, Morgan”
The track, co-written by Wallen alongside Miranda Lambert and Nicolle Galyon, comes in the form of a phone call to his mom, Lesli, and finds the country hitmaker giving her an update on his life and all the things that he has gone through recently.
“What’s going on mama? / Something’s just dawned on me / I ain’t been home in some months / Been chasing songs and women / Making some bad decisions / God knows I’m drinking too much / Yeah, I know you’ve been worrying ‘bout me / You’ve been losing sleep since ’93,” Wallen sings.
He continues, “I thought you should know that all those prayers you thought you wasted on me / Must’ve finally made their way on through / I thought you should know I got me a new girl down in Jefferson City and she lets me fish whenever I want to / Yeah, I’m still proud of where I came from / Still you’re only damn son / Can you believe I’m on the radio? / Just thought you should know, Thought you should know, Thought you should know.”
Wallen first shared the song with fans on social media in the Spring of 2021, when he released a live acoustic performance of the tune on Instagram. The clip has amassed over 2.7 million views since he teased it.
Wallen shared the clip on May 22, 2021, and at the time he introduced the song by saying, “Wrote this song for my mom a while ago. Seemed like an appropriate time to share it.”
Wallen, who has recently teased several new songs, including “Tennessee Fan” and “Me + All Your Reasons,” confirmed that he’s been in the studio working on new music.
“I’ve been working on new music. I’ve been in the studio, I’ve been grinding, I’ve been writing a lot,” Wallen told fans in an Instagram story in late August.
“Me and HARDY just wrote one on the road the other day that I’m really pumped about. It’s one of the best ones that we’ve written in a long time, if not ever,” the CMA Awards nominee went on to say.
Wallen previously opened up about new music on Country Countdown with Lon Helton, where he revealed that he has been writing new material and already has 12 songs finished.
“I’ve already got 12 songs finished, maybe more. I’m just trying to beat what I’ve got,” Wallen told Helton while co-hosting the show. “I’m confident in whatever I do next already. Overall I feel pretty comfortable. I don’t feel rushed. I’ve got other things, I’ve got the tour, I’ve got my son, so I’m glad that I’ve already spent some time on the next project,” he added.
Wallen also recently wrapped up his recording-breaking, headlining Dangerous Tour, which was completely sold out, selling over 839,704 tickets. The trek concluded with his first-ever headlining stadium concert at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, which broke attendance records at the venue.
Morgan Wallen recently played his final show of the year and is currently working on his new album.
“Last show for a while. Now it’s onto album grind mode, let’s get it,” Wallen wrote.
He is set to perform “You Proof” at the upcoming 56th Annual CMA Awards, where he is also nominated for two CMA Awards, including the coveted Entertainer Of The Year and Male Vocalist Of The Year.
Additionally, his song “Sand In My Boots,” written by HARDY, Ashley Gorley and Josh Osborne, is also nominated for Song Of The Year at the 2022 CMA Awards.
