The East Tennessee native shared with the publication that although he and Smith have experience some co-parenting “difficulties” in the beginning, that have overcome those and are now focused on their 6-month-old son, Indigo (Indie) Wilder Wallen. Wallen sharing that “the most important thing is just he’s in our life now,” and that he is “happy,” “healthy” and “incredible.”
Wallen and Smith were engaged for three years before breaking up in 2019, Indigo is their first and only child together. Since their breakup, the couple has worked through their aforementioned co-parenting difficulties and are being the best parents they can be to baby Indie.
Additionally, The singer now says that he is “thankful” to have a son with someone he cares about and shares that they are doing their best to “figure it out” and “just trying to do the best we can with the situation. I mean, a lot of people obviously have been in this situation before — having a kid with someone you’re not with, but knowing that doesn’t make it any easier.”
And although, the superstar never imagined being a single dad to his son, as he wanted a family like his parents, who are still together and raised him and his sisters since birth together.
The superstar shared that being a single dad “is definitely not how I imagined parenthood. I wanted to have a family like my parents. My parents are still together, you know. They raised [me and my sisters] together. That was my idea for what my life would look like. Obviously, that’s not the way it turned out. And I struggled with that a little bit when I first found out.”
When first welcoming his son into the world he made him a promise that he’ll be the dad that Indie deserves, but he admitted that he “didn’t know what being a dad would feel like” and says he was “honestly a little scared.”
But now, he reveals that being a dad is “the coolest damn feeling, and I’m ready for whatever God has planned for me and my little guy.”
Wallen has learned and is “still learning” from his parents, Tommy and Lesli, who came to assist him from Knoxville. And even though he doesn’t consider himself “an expert by any means,” he is doing his best to co-parent his adorable son and says that now that Indie is of age to go between two houses, his house looks a lot like a baby lives there.
“KT’s worked with me throughout the whole time, so I’ve been able to see him a lot since he was born,” Wallen added. “So if you walk in my house now, you think a baby lives here.”
