Lainey Wilson has released her official music video for her critically acclaimed track “Somewhere Over Laredo.” The song belongs on the deluxe edition of Wilson’s highly successful Whirlwind album, due out Aug. 22 via BBR Music Group/BMG Nashville.

Directed by TK McKamy, this cinematic clip was inspired by the popular 1930s fantasy film, The Wizard of Oz.  The epic visual opens up with Wilson stuffing her guitar case in the overhead cabin of an airplane and, then, swirling her straw in her strong drink of choice while reminiscing over lost love. Before she knows it, she’s falling into a lucid dream, where she’s seen hitchhiking down her own version of the yellow brick road.

Surrounded by golden desert and dusty skies, Wilson has seemingly traded out the tornados of Kansas for southern beauty, fast horses, pickup trucks, and fields that run for miles. Of note, Wilson’s (real-life) French Bulldog, Hippie, accompanies her throughout the video — a nod to The Wizard of Oz character Dorothy’s pet puppy Toto. In the clip, Hippie dons a custom denim jacket, created by Taylor’s Bling Creations, that says Bell Bottom Country in colorful rhinestones.

I’ll be somewhere over Laredo / Dreamin’ about those rodeo nights / Laid there on the banks of the Rio / New silver buckle on your jeans next to mine / Couple wrong for each other / Lonestar-crossed lovers / Born to get gone from the get-go / But you’re on my mind every time I’m chasin’ this neon rainbow / Somewhere over Laredo,” Wilson mouths out the chorus of the track while dressed in a tan leather vest and striped and colorful western-style pants.

As with the music video, “Somewhere Over Laredo” gives a nod to The Wizard of Oz film, with its tribute to lead actress Judy Garland’s timeless classic “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Written alongside Trannie Anderson, Dallas Wilson, and Andy Albert, this stirring ballad finds Wilson capturing a nostalgic story, where the narrator can’t help but miss a once border-town romance that took place in the Lone Star State. Although Wilson’s head is 10,000 feet up in the clouds as she travels across the country in a Boeing 737, her mind has transported her back in time as she flies over the city of Laredo.

Wilson debuted a live performance of “Somewhere Over Laredo” during the 2025 American Music Awards, where she was also nominated for Favorite Female Country Artist alongside Beyoncé, Ella Langley, and Kacey Musgraves.

“When I’m flying between shows, I catch myself looking out the window, talking to God, dreaming, or even reminiscing,” Wilson said, opening up about the track in an Instagram post. “Somewhere Over Laredo,” tells a story that speaks to that. I’ve always been inspired by putting myself into other peoples’ shoes and telling stories from others’ perspectives, but I’ve found a new creative avenue with this one, putting myself back into a pair of shoes that I wore years ago. Somewhere Over Laredo is available now 🌈✈️.”

“Somewhere Over Laredo” enjoyed streaming success upon its release, garnering over 1.16 million streams across platforms, becoming Wilson’s biggest first streaming day. The track is one of five new songs to be showcased on the deluxe edition of Whirlwind. The other four tracks include “Bell Bottoms Up,” “King Ranch, King George, King James,” “Yesterday, All Day, Every Day,” and “Peace, Love, and Cowboys.”
