Bryce Leatherwood said Lorrie Morgan reacting to his cover of her husband Keith Whitley’s song, “Don’t Close Your Eyes” was “one of the coolest moments” on this season of NBC’s The Voice. Leatherwood shared more about Morgan’s reaction and his subsequent response in a new interview with Music Mayhem.

“That was one of the coolest moments this whole season for me,” Leatherwood told Music Mayhem of Morgan’s reaction to his cover of the song.

He continued, “Keith Whitley’s an inspiration to me and to have his widow send me her love and her praise when she didn’t have to, she could have just listened to it herself and she went out of her way to thank me for singing her husband’s song. God Rest His Soul. It made me realize I’m doing something right. So I was very happy I chose that song,” he said.

Leatherwood sang a cover of the late Whitley’s song, “Don’t Close Your Eyes” during The Voice finals this season. Following his performance, Morgan shared a link to Leatherwood covering the song on the show, writing that “Keith was smiling down.”

“Did you see The Voice finals last night?,” Morgan said in a Facebook post, tagging Leatherwood. “Bryce Leatherwood Music on Team Blake Shelton sang ‘Don’t Close Your Eyes.’ Bryce did such a great job and I think he deserves to win for this performance alone! I’ll bet Keith is smiling down! Brought tears to my eyes!,” she added, directing her followers to the link to the performance.

Morgan closed out the post, telling everyone to “keep an eye on [Leatherwood] along with [her].”

Following the live results show the next night, Leatherwood was crowned the season 22 winner of The Voice. After he was announced the winner, Leatherwood took to Instagram to share his shock and excitement with his fans.

“I am lost for words… this experience has been one that I will cherish for the rest of my life,” he wrote. “The incredible people I have met along this journey have made this all worth it. To my family, the people of Georgia, and for my fans watching around the world, THIS IS FOR YALL! God is good.”

Now that he has been crowned The Voice season 22 champion, Leatherwood is continuing to dream big dreams. In a previous interview with Music Mayhem, Leatherwood said he’s saving up money so he can move to Nashville. He also revealed he hopes to play the Grand Ole Opry someday.

“Ever since I picked up a guitar, [playing the Opry has] been the dream of mine. So if I get that opportunity one day, that’ll be a dream come true. That’ll be a good day for Bryce Leatherwood. So I’m just ready to see what happens,” he said.

In addition, he’s hard at work. Leatherwood is writing his own original music. He’s also meeting with his record label and preparing to release music he’s made with fellow Voice contestants from this past season.

“There are several contestants [I’ve written songs with],” Leatherwood revealed. “I’m not going to mention their names right now, but I’ve written with them and we’re going to put out some music pretty soon and it’s going to be good. So there are a lot of other artists I’d like to write with as well that we’re on the show and whoever wants to write, if anyone needs help, if anyone wants to write with me, you just call me and let me know,” he said.
