How And When Did The Band Perry Form?
The award-winning trio formed in 2005 after Kimberly Perry began performing in a band as a teenager and her brothers Reid and Neil served as her road crew. After launching The Band Perry, Kimberly, Reid and Neil then hit the road on the New Faces Of Country Tour in 2005.
Three years later, Garth Brooks’ manager Bob Doyle discovered the group and assisted in helping them get music recorded, which he then sent to Scott Borchetta, who was the head of the newly-established Republic Nashville label at the time.
The group later signed with Borchetta in August of 2009 and exploded into the Country music spotlight with their debut single, “Hip To My Heart,” which was written by all three members of the trio, Kimberly, Reid and Neil. The tune earned the trio their first Top 20 hit at Country radio.

Their First-Ever No. 1 Hit Is “If I Die Young”
Following the success of “Hip To My Heart,” the group released “If I Die Young,” which has gone on to become the most successful song of their career. Released on June 8, 2010, and penned solely by Kimberly Perry, “If I Die Young” marked their first No. 1 hit. The song earned the trio a countless amount of award nominations, including Best Country Song at the 53rd GRAMMY Awards, Single of the Year and Song of the Year at the 2011 Academy of Country Music Awards. The song, which is now certified 7X Platinum by the RIAA, also won Single Of The Year and Song Of The Year at the 2011 CMA Awards.
“We really have gotten to live and love at our young ages. ‘If I Die Young,’ for us, is about, if it all ends at this moment, look at what we’ve gotten to do. Whatever time we’re given will be absolutely enough, as long as we make the most of it,” Kimberly previously shared of the tune. (per The Boot) “We’ve had people writing in and telling us about what this song means to them. People are finding a lot of life through this song. That’s the spirit that we wrote it out of. That makes us so excited.”
Released Their Debut Album In 2010
Both songs, “If I Die Young” and “Hip To My Heart,” appear on The Band Perry’s self-titled debut album, which was released October 12, 2010. “You Lie,” “All Your Life,” and “Postcard From Paris” were also released as singles from their 11-track debut project.
In 2012, the band began working with producer Rick Rubin for their second studio album, Pioneer. The album was released on April 2, 2013, and featured the lead “Better Dig Two,” which impacted Country radio on October 30, 2012. Pioneer also featured “Done” as a second single. “Done” charted in March 2013 ahead of its release date, reaching number 8 on the Hot Country chart. The tune later reached the No. 1 spot on the Country Airplay chart in August of 2013.
Covered Glen Campbell Hit
In 2014, the chart-topping trio recorded a cover of Glen Campbell’s “Gentle On My Mind.” Their cover of the Campbell hit was released as a standalone single from the Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me documentary soundtrack.
The Band Perry released their final single, “Live Forever,” as part of Big Machine Label Group the following year. In 2016, the group parted ways with Big Machine Label Group and signed with Interscope Records, according to a Billboard report.
Additionally, they then decided to embark on a career in the pop genre in addition to Country music.
Kimberly, Neil and Reid also had plans to release singles to country radio via Universal Music Group Nashville. “Comeback Kid,” “Stay In The Dark” and “The Good Life” were released following their split from BMLG and none of the tunes climbed the charts.
