Morgan Wallen honored his mother Lesli during his recent concert at PNC Music Pavilion in North Carolina on Thursday (June 2). The show also marked Wallen’s first-ever headlining amphitheater show.
The country superstar made his way through the capacity crowd to a b-stage on the lawn in the very back of the amphitheater to perform several songs, including one that is very special to the singer, “Thought You Should Know.”
“I ain’t never played this song live, Imma do it, it’s pretty new, I ain’t never did a stage like this. I like it though, I think Imma keep doing it. This is a song for my Mama, It’s called ‘Thought You Should Know,” Wallen told the screaming crowd.
Joined by his guitarist Dominic Frost, the reigning Billboard Top Country Male Artist then performed the song, which serves as a tribute to his mom Lesli. Despite the song only being out for a few weeks, the sold-out crowd already knew every word and roared the lyrics back to Wallen.
“Thank you guys very much, shout out to you Mama,” Wallen said as he concluded his performance of “Thought You Should Know.”
Wallen also performed “Flower Shops,” sans ERNEST, and “Cover Me Up” from the general admission lawn area of the venue.
Morgan Wallen’s Mom Lesli Recently Shared Her Reaction To The Song
During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Wallen’s mother, who accompanied the East Tennessee native on the Billboard Music Awards red carpet, revealed that she was emotional when she first heard “Thought You Should Know.”
“The first time I heard [the song], I cried, and of course I was just so humbled that he would do that for me,” Lesli shared. “The second time I heard it, I said ‘who’s the girl from Jefferson City?,’” she joked, referencing a lyric from the song.
Wallen then proceeded to explain that the girl from the song “isn’t around anymore” and that he hopes his mom is worrying about him less because he’s been trying to make “better decisions.”

The “Wasted On You” singer also credited his mother with giving his career its “initial start.”
“I mean, I don’t think I’d be here if it weren’t for [my mom],” Wallen admitted. “She threw me up on stage when I was 3-years-old, and a whole lot of other things since then too, but she gave me my initial start, so I’m trying to show her some recognition,” he explained.
Morgan Wallen Released “Thought You Should Know” Mother’s Day Weekend
“This one’s for you mama. I know it didn’t always seem like those prayers were getting through. I Hope this song is a testament to the fact that they did,” Wallen wrote upon the tune’s release. “Still your only damn son, Morgan”
The track, co-written by Wallen alongside Miranda Lambert and Nicolle Galyon, comes in the form of a phone call to his mom, Lesli Wallen and finds the country hitmaker giving his mom an update on his life and all the things that he has gone through recently.
“What’s going on mama? / Something’s just dawned on me / I ain’t been home in some months / Been chasing songs and women / Making some bad decisions / God knows I’m drinking too much / Yeah, I know you’ve been worrying ‘bout me / You’ve been losing sleep since ’93,” Wallen sings in the clip.
He continues to sing, “I thought you should know that all those prayers you thought you wasted on me / Must’ve finally made their way on through / I thought you should know I got me a new girl down in Jefferson City and she lets me fish whenever I want to / Yeah, I’m still proud of where I came from / Still you’re only damn son / Can you believe I’m on the radio? / Just thought you should know, Thought you should know, Thought you should know.”
