Thomas Rhett & his dad Rhett Akins shared a special moment at the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday, June 12.

Following Rhett’s 3-song performance that included several hits such as “Sixteen,” “Die A Happy Man” and his latest radio single, “Country Again,” Rhett was joined by his dad Rhett Akins for a special father/son performance, just a week ahead of Father’s Day, marking their first-ever performance together at the Opry.

“So, we’re going to play you a song together that we wrote together,” Rhett told the capacity Opry crowd. “This was the first single off my latest album [Country Again: Side A].”

His dad then added, “this is unbelievable, you were over there at 2-years-old watching me play and we’ve written songs in the kitchen since you were about 8-years-old and now we’re singing one on the Grand Ole Opry that we wrote and it went to No. 1. Thank you Lord.”

The superstar father/son pairing earned a standing ovation with their “What’s Your Country Song” performance.

After their special performance, Rhett gushed over how far he’s come since he first played the Opry and performed a track he wrote with his dad.

“This is what dreams are made of right here. I’ll never forget my very, very first Opry experience, I think this was in 2012. Standing in this circle, not having a dang hit at all and now we’re here standing with my Dad. This is absolutely unbelievable. So thank you, thank you for showing up tonight and showing out. Means so much!”

Rhett then performed a song called “Things Dads Do,” in honor of Father’s Day.

“In lieu of Father’s Day coming up in a couple weeks,” Rhett began to explain. “I’m going to release a new song in a couple weeks and I’ve never played this song for anyone, except for my dad. I wrote it with my Dad and I played it for my wife, she thought it was good, so I thought I’d play it for you guys tonight. Of all the songs me and Dad have written together, this is probably one of my favorites.”

The singer then went on to give the live debut of the brand new track, see lyrics from the heartfelt new song below.

“Act like he does when he don’t have a clue and I know it seems / Like he’s flying by the seat of his outa style jeans / You’ll get embarrassed when he ruins your cool / When he pulls out his camera on your first day of school / And that’s just a few of things dads do,” Rhett sings in the new song’s chorus.
