Maddie Poppe and Caleb Lee Hutchinson are just two of the American Idol alums who will be returning to the Idol stage for the Great Idol Reunion special airing on May 2 in honor of the show’s 20th season.
The pair competed on Season 16 of the show, with Poppe claiming victory and Hutchinson being named as runner-up. In addition, the pair, announced they were dating during the season 16 finale, which sent judge Katy Perry spinning around in her chair in shock.
Hutchinson and Poppe sang together as the top two contestants during season 16 with their rendition of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” and “What A Wonderful World.”
The pair joined hands toward the end of the mash-up, with Hutchinson hugging Poppe after they had finished singing together.
Idol host Ryan Seacrest complimented the couple’s performance, wiping away tears and saying, “That was beautiful. I’m in tears watching these two sing that song.”
In addition to their top two performance, Hutchinson and Poppe joined forces on the song, “A Whole New World” from the animated movie, Aladdin for Disney night. The performance aired as part of the competition’s top 10 round.
Following the conclusion of their season of Idol in 2018, Hutchinson and Poppe are still dating. Poppe reportedly even said she’s ready to marry Hutchinson, according to Talent Recap.
Musically speaking, Hutchinson has released two EPs, including Slot Machine Syndrome, which dropped in 2021. Meanwhile, Poppe released her debut album, Whirlwind in 2019 as well as a holiday album called, Christmas From Home in 2021.
Poppe will also be touring in June, as she recently shared on her Instagram page.
It looks as though the pair is writing songs together, too.
Hutchinson shared a photo of him and Poppe back in March via Instagram, saying, “writing songs, painting houses. Hit us up @hgtv.”
Hutchinson and Poppe will sing another duet during the Idol reunion special airing in honor of the 20th season on May 2. They will be joined by fellow Idol alums, including Ruben Studdard, Jordin Sparks, Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery, David Cook, Kris Allen, Laine Hardy, Laci Kaye Booth, Willie Spence and Grace Kinstler, according to Deadline.
