After releasing his newest single, “We Got History,” to country radio in late 2022, Mitchell Tenpenny is back with the accompanying video for the song. And it’s bound to take viewers on a ride that’s like a blast from the past.

In this clip, which was filmed near Cocoa Beach, Florida and was directed by Brenton Giesey, two people can be seen forming an instant romantic connection after meeting each other at a bar. The male character in the video – an astronaut – presumably playing a younger version of Tenpenny, makes his way into a bar to meet his friends and quickly strikes-up a conversation with the bartender.

The pair seemingly hit it off, and soon enough, they begin spending time together. They walk hand in hand along the beach, sing karaoke together, and play a round of pool. But their romance is short-lived. The man eventually finds the woman with another man – one sporting a scorpion tattoo. Despite her betrayal, the male character can’t help but fixate on the memories he once shared with his former love interest. He knows the two of them will always share a history.

‘Cause we got spring break ’08 / Down in Pensacola / Drunk and singing Breakfast at Tiffany’s / Yeah, we got so high, first time / Back of your Corolla / Told me, ‘Baby, don’t you stop kissing me, kissing me’ / I know we don’t have a future anymore / But damn, we got history,” Tenpenny is meanwhile seen emotionally singing the lyrics of the tune while drinking alone and looking at a note that he pulled from his pocket.

At the end of the clip, Tenpenny is featured sporting a space pilot suit alongside his crew. He realizes the astronaut behind him is the same man with the scorpion tattoo. Tenpenny watches as the crew member kisses-goodbye the girl from previous scenes. The crew then gathers into a spacecraft that shoots off in the distance as the girl watches from afar.

Mitchell, who is happily married to fellow country singer Meghan Patrick, previously opened up about the lyrics behind the song in a press release, saying, “Everybody has a story and a past. You don’t always have to hate where you come from. It’s ok to remember who got you to where you are. There is a respect that is mature and healthy and that’s what I wanted to talk about in this song. I’m so pumped for this to be my next single on country radio.”

“We Got History,” written by Mitchell with Andy Albert, Devin Dawson, and Jordan Schmidt follows the recent chart-topping success of “Truth About You” and “At The End Of A Bar” with Chris Young. The song is also included on Tenpenny’s current 20-track album, This Is The Heavy, released in September of 2022.

In addition to releasing his latest video and song, Tenpenny will kick off his This Is The Heavy Tour on Thursday (Jan. 19) at the Northern Quest Resort & Casino in Airways Heights, Washington, featuring special guest Tyler Brayden. The tour will also visit Music City next month, where Tenpenny will perform back-to-back concerts at the Ryman Auditorium.

In March, he will begin his first-ever run of shows overseas with Morgan Evans for their co-headlining Day Drunk Me Tour.

“I’ve always wanted to play shows overseas,” Mitchell said in a press release. “We tried in 2020. Flew over there and then had to fly right back before even playing a show. So, this is a long time in the making, and I couldn’t be more excited to play for the fans who have never had the chance to see us play live before. It’s going to be a party!”
