Mackenzie Carpenter takes a page out of Cyndi Lauper’s book with the release of “Country Girls (Just Wanna Have Fun).”

The uptempo track, which dropped on Friday (Sept. 1), via The Valory Music Co. is the perfect tune for any female who wishes to spend the night out on the town and in the honky tonks with her girl squad by her side.

“Country Girls (Just Wanna Have Fun)” finds the Georgia-born and bred singer/songwriter sticking to Lauper’s infectious melody of the original “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” track but incorporating her own twang spin on it as she changes up the lyrics and includes plenty of bluegrass instruments over a dance beat that drives the melody.

Clever Lyrics

Listeners will be thoroughly entertained as Carpenter uses clever lyricism to remind them that country girls, too, like to have fun.

Want a cowboy to take my hand / And boot scoot and two-step me to a cover band / I’ll whiskey wink, he’ll think that he stands a chance / And kiss him just because / Country girls just wanna have fun,” Carpenter belts out the reimagined lyrics before heading into the chorus. “That’s all they really want, to get drunk / Spin around and fall in love / Country girls just wanna have fun / Country girls just wanna have fun.”

In a press release, Carpenter shared how “Country Girls (Just Wanna Have Fun)” came together in the writing room.

“I showed up to a write one day saying I wanted to write the country version of ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’ and next thing you know we started ad-libbing and ended up re-writing the ‘80s classic…but with a whole lot of country flair,” she said.

“It all came together in a really fun, colorful way, and I hope people feel like they can crank it up and have some fun—the boys too!” She added of the fresh revision to the iconic ‘80s anthem.

40th Anniversary Of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun”

“Country Girls (Just Wanna Have Fun)” comes ahead of the 40th anniversary of Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun,” which dropped on September 6, 1983. But, it’s interesting to note that Lauper didn’t initially write, nor was she the first to record “Girls Just Want To Have Fun.”

According to American Songwriter, the song was “written and recorded and first performed by the American artist Robert Hazard, who released the song as a single as far back as 1979.” Despite that, it changed the game for Lauper, whose version took her all the way to the top of the charts internationally and to the No. 2 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 charts.

Before releasing her revised take on the tune, Carpenter teased “Country Girls (Just Wanna Have Fun)” on social media.

“Country Girls (Just Wanna Have Fun)… coming 9/1!!!! 🤠💕🍾🪩🕺,” she captioned a clip, giving her Instagram following a heads-up on the release.

To Join Megan Moroney On Tour

MacKenzie Carpenter, who has opened for names like Miranda Lambert, Jake Owen, Parker McCollum, Craig Campbell, and Ryan Hurd, later shared the cover art for the track, which shows her lying down outdoors on a couch and tipping her cowgirl hat with the title of track spread across the page in various colors.

“Country Girls (Just Wanna Have Fun)” comes after releases like “Jesus I’m Jealous,” the TikTok-viral “Huntin’ Season,” and her sassy “Don’t Mess With Exes.”

Since signing her record deal with The Valory Music Co. in 2022, Carpenter has been recognized as an artist to watch, having been featured in several country music spotlight programs. And, her schedule doesn’t stop as she will soon join “Tennessee Orange” singer Megan Moroney on the road for select dates of her The Lucky Tour. Moroney’s trek kicks off Sept. 20 at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City, NY.
