Jake Hoot shared the story of how his duet with Kelly Clarkson came together.

Hoot co-wrote the track alongside Jamie Floyd and Lonestar’s Dean Sams. “I Would’ve Loved You” will appear on Hoot’s forthcoming highly-anticipated debut EP, Love Out Of Time. The song was recorded in two separate studios, Hoot recorded his part first in Tennessee and after he completed his, they sent it off to Clarkson, and then she recorded her part in California.

In a recent interview with Everything Nash, Hoot shared the details of how “I Would’ve Loved You” came to be.

“I had met Dean at a welcome home concert that I did when I first got back from The Voice, he and the rest of Lonestar came out to play with me,” Hoot explained. “We just struck up a friendship and he would invite me over to write and one day he said ‘hey I’ve got this really great write happening in a couple days, i’d like you to be a part of it’ and I said ‘okay.’ Showed up and a girl named Jamie Floyd was there and little did I know how great of a writer she was and so we sat down and just kind of game planned and this song just happened. I think it took us maybe two or three hours to write this song, it was just quick. We were all pulling from personal experiences and past hurts and memories and what not and this song melted together.”

After writing the song with Floyd and Sams, Hoot knew that Clarkson would be the perfect pairing for the collaboration as her powerhouse vocals would give the soaring ballad a much more powerful sound.

“When we wrote it, I said, ‘I think this would be awesome if we got Kelly to sing on this,’ When I was on The Voice, she said, ‘Hey, let’s do something together,’” Hoot continued. “So I sent it to her, and didn’t hear anything. And then later on in the year, when we were seriously considering putting this on the album,  I said, ‘You know what? I’m just going to text her again,’ because I had to ask her a couple of questions about other things. So I said ‘hey can you call,’ we talked and then I asked her and I said ‘hey I sent you a song, didn’t know what you thought about it, didn’t know if you wanted to be on or a part of this project’ and she said ‘I never heard it. What song are you talking about,’ so I said ‘i’ll send it over again real quick.’”

Upon hearing the track, Clarkson signed on to be apart of it, saying: “‘I want to shout this from the rooftops. Yes, I’m in! Like, let’s get this done.’”

Hoot added, “Trying to coordinate her incredibly busy schedule with mine, recording everything and then also a wedding coming up and then having to fly to LA to record, or having to send stuff out there, it just all worked perfectly.”

After hearing the final product, Clarkson told Hoot that they should film a music video for the duet.

“Once she heard the finished project, she’s actually the one who said, let’s do a music video, so we did a music video to,” Hoot revealed. “We flew out to Los Angeles and were apart of it. So, it’s just been an incredible thing and I can’t wait for everybody to hear it.”
