Jake Hoot and Kelly Clarkson appeared on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna on Monday (March 1) morning to chat about their heart-wrenching duet, “I Would’ve Loved You” and during the discussion Hoot shared how his life has changed since winning The Voice and working with Clarkson on their powerful duet.

Host Hoda Kotb asked Hoot if his life has changed since sharing this duet moment with Clarkson and winning Season 17 of The Voice on Team Kelly. Which the singer replied “oh yeah, absolutely, just when I think it can’t get any better, life throws a curve ball and it’s like goodness where’d this come from but it’s been amazing.”

The Season 17 Voice champion also shared that he appreciated Clarkson’s generosity as although Clarkson is very busy with her career, she always makes sure to take the time out to reach out and connect with people and check on them.

“It’s been great, I mean, Kelly, you and I talked about it, you’re so busy all the time, you got so many things going on and the fact that you take time to reach out to people and check on them. And I know you’ve checked on me a few times and just the help and stuff has been incredible. And like you said, I can’t speak to anybody else as far as them helping people after the whole Voice experience but with me Kelly’s been great and the fact that we recorded this and then she’s actually the one who came up with the idea to record the music video and the fact that she did that as well has been amazing.”

Hoot also shared how their “I Would’ve Loved You” duet came to be during the interview segment.

“I had been writing songs with Dean, the piano player from Lonestar, he became a good friend of mine and he called me in on a co-write and Jamie Floyd was there and she had this idea of I would’ve loved you but now I’m gonna hate you and it was just such a raw idea, that we all jumped on it,” Hoot explained of the track’s origin. “Wrote the song real quick and then immediately afterwards, I was like I think I’m going to ask Kelly [Clarkson] to sing on this song, I really like this, I think it would be a good duet song and so it just kind of took off from there.”

The interview concluded with a reminder that Clarkson and Hoot were supposed to perform the duet for the first-time ever together on The Kelly Clarkson Show but winter weather put a halt to that.

“We were actually supposed to get to perform this for the first-time on my show and he [Hoot] got snowed in because the storm, so we’re going to have to make that up, so stay tuned everybody,” Clarkson said. “It’s coming out.”

Tonight (March 1), Clarkson will return to her big red chair on Season 20 of The Voice tonight at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
