Ohio sibling trio Girl Named Tom ended 2021 as the grand champions of Season 21 of NBC’s The Voice, where they made history as the first trio to ever win the popular singing competition show. Before Caleb (26), Joshua (24), and Bekah (20) dominated the stage during the finale on December 14 – they obtained valuable career advice that is worth more than any cash prize or even a record deal.
With butterflies fluttering in their stomachs and thoughts running through their head, the family-oriented group received a text message from their seasoned coach, Kelly Clarkson ahead of the life-altering night.
“Before the final Monday show, she texted out group chat,” Caleb exclusively told Distractify. “She told us to have fun and let go of any desire for perfection. ‘It’s an art, and it’s supposed to be inspiring, fun, and keep us growing,’” the text from the multi-platinum artist read.
The female vocalist of the group, Bekah, continued to reveal that Clarkson opened their eyes to the harsh reality of the music industry. “No matter where you’re at in this music business, you’ve gotta work your BUTT off!” Clarkson declared in the group chat. “Everything she says is such valuable advice because it’s coming from someone who’s been there,” adds Bekah Grace.
The robust singer-songwriter did not fail to mention that many individuals pursuing their craft casually slow down after they believe they reached success or their peak. “A lot of folks think that once you’re at a certain point, you’ve “made it” in the music industry, but Kelly’s advice gives us a realistic view of what life is going to be like. We’ve made up our minds that we’re going to work hard in this industry,” she concluded.
The group has already lived up to their self-promise, as their drive and dedication scored them a spot on Clarkson’s team following their astonishing rendition of “Helplessly” during the Blind Auditions. Their radio-worthy harmonies and creative covers of chart-topping tracks throughout the seasons – left the trio standing under the spotlight and battling for the prestigious accolade.
While taking Clarkson’s guidance to heart, Girl Named Tom took home the crown and became the first-ever group to win the fan-favorite singing competition. After creating history, the siblings returned to their roots to be at their father’s bedside as he fought for his life against a rare form of cancer.
However, with their supportive fan base and family behind them – the trio is entering 2022 in full force. Caleb recently revealed that their main priority for the new year is to make magic in the studio and to connect with their community in person.
“Our goals for 2022 are clear: Release a full-length album full of meaningful songs and take it on the road when we can,” he said before his brother Josh chimed in to mention his excitement and plans. “Write, record, release! And of course tour; we’re excited to play for and connect with our amazing fans when we can.”
As they hone in on their original content, they will also be focusing on developing their sound and pushing their musical boundaries. On Wednesday, January 5, during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the trio opened up about their massive win and projects in the pipeline.
Following the interview, the trio took center stage to perform a cover of James Taylor’s “Carolina in My Mind.”
