Taking on a song by Elton John is a tall order for any singer, but Season 24 American Idol contestant Genevieve Heyward was more than ready for the challenge. And, she did not disappoint.
The Nashville, Tennessee, transplant, who grew up singing in Door County, Wisconsin, took the stage during Idol’s “Ohana Round” with a clear plan. Armed with her piano skills, Heyward not only showcased her instrumental skills but also delivered a heartfelt vocal performance on one of the most beloved ballads in pop music.
Known for her gritty, rock-leaning voice earlier in the competition, Heyward surprised both the audience and the judges by stepping outside of her comfort zone. Choosing a softer, more vulnerable performance allowed her to highlight another dimension of her artistry, something judges Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie often encourage contestants to explore.

But the song choice carried even deeper meaning for the singer. Before beginning, Heyward shared that she was dedicating her performance to her father, a veteran of the Vietnam War.
“I picked this song today because the last time that my father was in Hawaii, he was on leave from Vietnam,” she shared before pointing to her parents seated in the crowd. “Give it up for my dad. Thank you for your service done. If I could give you the world, I would. But for right now, I’m just going to start with the song.”
Performing at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Oahu, Hawaii, Heyward stepped onto the stage in a striking red ensemble paired with sparkly boots. With her blonde hair worn down, she already looked like a seasoned performer ready for an awards show stage.
As she began playing the piano and singing “Your Song,” Heyward leaned into the emotion of the lyrics. Her voice moved from gentle and restrained to powerful and soaring, building intensity as the performance progressed. The combination of her piano playing and heartfelt delivery created an intimate moment that held the audience’s attention from beginning to end.
“And you can tell everybody / This is your song / It may be quite simple, but / Now that it’s done / I hope you don’t mind, I hope you don’t mind / That I put down in words / How wonderful life is / While you’re in the world,” she sang, commanding the audience.
During the performance, Heyward’s father was visibly moved, removing his glasses to wipe away tears. The crowd remained silent for much of the song, absorbing the emotional tribute. As the performance reached the chorus, someone in the audience could be heard making the mark that “this was so unexpected,” while the judges quietly sang along.
Lionel Richie applauded Heyward’s composure and ability to tackle such a legendary song.
“Identity is hard when you sing such an iconic song like Elton’s, but for you to hang on and keep in control of that is amazing,” Richie said. “Way to come out here and box, all right?”
After the performance, Heyward reflected on the emotional moment, saying, “I honestly am not an emotional person, but I thought about my mom and dad and just how they have literally been there for me since day one.”

Fortunately, her parents will be able to continue supporting her journey on the show because Heyward has advanced into the Top 20 alongside contestants including Philmon Lee, Madison Moon, Braden Rumfelt, Jake Thistle, Jesse Findling, Ruby Rae, Lucas Leon, Hannah Harper, Chris Tungseth, Julian Kalel, Rae, Daniel Stallworth, Abiyomi, Kutter Bradley, Makiyah, and Keyla Richardson.
Three contestants, Jordan McCullough, Brooks Rosser, and Kyndal Inskeep, also earned coveted Platinum Tickets, voted on by fellow contestants, family members participating in the Ohana round, and industry tastemakers.
