Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood are recording a duet cover of the Oscar-winning track “Shallow,” first recorded by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper for the movie, A Star Is Born.

In a recent PEOPLE TV interview with Nancy Odell, Brooks teared up when talking about the duet.

“In the movie, their relationship is not long, but what I sing is,” say Brooks. “It’s new,” added Yearwood.

Brooks was moved during the recording the song by the memory of first meeting Yearwood over 30 years ago.

“since 1987/1988, when you meet a girl that moved here for the same reason you did, trying to get a deal, you’re doing demos, passing each other in the hallway, then you realize everyday from that moment as artists, as friends, then all of sudden it turns around the turn of the century to okay after five years, okay we’re gonna date and you see all that when you sing the song, I do, she just sees Bradley.”

“When you’re looking at her and you’re gazing into her eyes and you’re getting a little teary eyed there, which I love, doesn’t that make it hard to sing,” asked Odell.

“It’s funny cause their lyric is ‘tell me something girl’ and you’re just looking right at her but are you happy in this modern world because now that’s my freakin’ responsibility.” Brooks said teary eyed.

The couple previously performed the impressive cover during a Facebook Live concert.

Brooks says he has also recorded a new album entitled, Fun, but he has held off on releasing the album due to the ongoing pandemic. The country superstar says he also has a live companion album from his Stadium Tour.

PEOPLE (the TV Show!) premiered on Monday, Sept. 14. The show airs and streams on PEOPLE.com and on the PeopleTV app at 7 p.m. ET, from Monday to Friday.
