Carrie Underwood stunned American Idol viewers on Easter Sunday (April 20) with an angelic performance of “How Great Thou Art” and her rendition of the track earned praise from fellow country stars and fans.

The 42-year-old Oklahoma native and American Idol judge stunned in an elegant off-white gown adorned with floral-inspired shoulders. Backed by a gospel choir and full band, Carrie Underwood let her powerhouse vocals take center stage as she delivered a goosebump-inducing rendition of “How Great Thou Art.” The performance opened with low-lying fog drifting across the stage floor and heavenly cloud visuals lighting up the background as Underwood gently sang the song’s opening verse.

“Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee/ How great Thou art, how great Thou art/ Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee/ How great Thou art, how great Thou art,” Underwood sang, effortlessly belting out the lyrics of the faith-based track.

Luke Bryan, Jelly Roll, and Lionel Richie looked on from the star-studded judges’ panel as she delivered a powerful rendition of the beloved church hymn. The studio audience swayed to the music, holding glowing candlesticks, creating a truly stunning and breathtaking visual.

Her performance concluded with a shower of white confetti falling over the audience, bringing the “Songs of Faith” Easter Sunday episode of Idol to a memorable close.

Earned Rave Reviews Of Her “How Great Thou Art” Performance

Fans and Idol viewers quickly took to social media to rave over Carrie Underwood’s performance of “How Great Thou Art.”

One X user wrote, “I’m pretty sure Carrie Underwood won American Idol for a 2nd time after that performance! Absolutely beautiful!” While others gushed, “I’ll never get tired of her singing this song,” “Wow. Wow. Wow. That performance was the best I’ve ever experienced,” and “She just made believers out of anyone who watched this who’s not yet a believer 🙌 the Girl took us all to church!”

Other fans, who were “totally blown away” by her performance, even dubbed her the “Queen of Country music.”

Some of Underwood’s fellow country superstars also applauded her performance, including Randy Travis, Hillary Scott of Lady A and more. Travis complimented her take of the Hymn, writing, “God blesses every song, every note Carrie sings! So pure and so perfect! An Angel amongst us… Amen!!” and Scott wrote, “This was exceptional, my friend!”

The Hymn Has Become A Staple In Her Iconic Catalog

Underwood’s rendition of “How Great Thou Art” has become a staple in her impressive catalog, as she first released a live version of the Hymn alongside Vince Gill in 2014 on the Greatest Hits: Decade #1 album, and later released her solo rendition of the track on her GRAMMY Award-winning gospel album, My Savior. Carrie Underwood has performed the song a countless number of times and included it within the set list of her record-breaking Las Vegas residency, REFLECTION.

American Idol “Songs Of Faith” Episode On Easter Sunday

Carrie Underwood was just one of the performers in a star-studded lineup on Easter Sunday’s episode of American Idol. The ‘Songs of Faith’ themed episode also featured performances from Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, Brandon Lake, Jelly Roll, CeCe Winans, and the entire Top 24, who were vying for a spot in the Top 20.

This year’s “Song Of Faith” episode marked the first time in Idol history that the popular singing competition show showcased all faith-based or gospel songs in celebration of a religious holiday.
