Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani praised 16-year-old Brayden Lape’s impressive Tim McGraw and Corey Kent covers during the season finale of NBC’s The Voice.

During Monday night’s (Dec. 12) episode, each of the Top 5 finalists took to the stage for their final performances of the season. Each of the finalists were given the task to perform a ballad and an uptempo electric tune during night one of the two night season finale in hopes of winning America’s vote to ultimately earn them the title of The Voice champion.

16-year-old Lape, who is the youngest finalist this season, chose to perform Tim McGraw’s “Humble And Kind.” The tune is a heartfelt ballad written by Lori McKenna that appears on McGraw’s fourteenth studio album, Damn Country Music.

Lape dedicated his finale performance of “Humble And Kind” to his hometown of Grass Lake, Michigan, and read a personal letter to everyone back home before he sang the country tune.

“Without you, I wouldn’t be here today,” Lape said as he read a letter to his hometown. “These past 16 years of being surrounded by the best family, friends and teachers has made me the person I am. Growing up here helped me fall in love with sports, fishing and now music… To top everything off, I have the best family. I’ve had support from them since the day I was born. My family has even traveled from Michigan to watch me on ‘The Voice’ stage. Overall, I’m so thankful for the things I’ve learned from growing up in my hometown and being lucky enough to have the opportunities that I’ve had. This performance is for you Grass Lake.”

Sitting on a stool and donning a beige suit, Lape delivered a stunning rendition of the McGraw hit. Throughout his performance, photos of Lape as a child with his family were displayed on the screens behind him.

Following his McGraw cover, Lape earned a roaring ovation from the audience and praise from Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani, who applauded his performance.

“I feel like I was your number one fan on the show,” Gwen Stefani gushed, to which Lape jokingly replied, “Then why didn’t you turn?,” referencing his blind audition.

“I can’t remember that far back,” Stefani replied laughing, “I will say this, that I always believed in you since the beginning, that you had something special, even outside of your voice. It’s just this thing, that I can’t put my finger on. I was right, look, you’re in the final, you’re amazing!”

His coach, Blake Shelton, agreed with Stefani’s compliments and then praised Lape.

“I’m not surprised at all to see you standing here in the finale,” Shelton admitted. “You’re literally following your heart up until this moment and it lead you to ‘The Voice’ and here you are just being the kid that you are.”

“You have so much talent, and so much in front of you, dude,” Shelton gushed. “Congratulations.”

During the show, Lape also took to the stage to deliver an impressive cover of The Voice alum Corey Kent’s viral hit, “Wild As Her.”
