Dolly Parton and Zach Williams’ collaborative single “There Was Jesus” takes home the GRAMMY Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song at the 63rd annual GRAMMY Awards.
During the GRAMMY Awards Premiere Ceremony on Sunday, March 14, host and three-time nominee Jhené Aiko announced the winners for several GRAMMY Award categories including Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song. The category that earned Parton her tenth GRAMMY win and Williams’ second.
“This is Jonathan here and I think I can speak for myself and Casey, we are so grateful for this opportunity, we want to thank Dolly Parton for being the champion from day one on this song,” songwriter and producer Jonathan Smith said during his acceptance speech. “Thank our families, thank the Academy, we love you guys, thanks so much!”
Parton said, “Thank you Jesus, thank you Zach Williams, and thank you to the GRAMMYs and all of our fans. I am very humbled but proud.”
“There Was Jesus” was co-written by Williams, Casey Beathard and Jonathan Smith. The track appears on Williams’ 2019 album, Rescue Story.
““When I first heard ‘There Was Jesus,’ it was one of the best songs I’d ever heard,” Parton previously shared of the track. “I loved Zach’s voice, and at that time I wanted to do something more uplifting. I felt like it was a Godsend, so I thought yes, this is my record and I’m going to sing with him on it! I’m really proud of how it turned out. I think people are going to get a blessing out of it. I know I have.”
The 63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards will feature performances by Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, Miranda Lambert, Black Pumas, BTS, Brandi Carlile, DaBaby, Doja Cat, Billie Eilish, HAIM, Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, Brittany Howard, Lil Baby, Mickey Guyton, Maren Morris, Dua Lipa, Chris Martin, John Mayer, Post Malone, Roddy Ricch and Harry Styles.
