Wearing blue jeans, a white t-shirt and denim button-up, Thompson kicked off the performance singing the opening verse of the tune before welcoming HunterGirl to the stage after the first chorus.

Donning matching denim ensembles, Thompson and HunterGirl belted out the lyrics to “One Day Tonight” as the Idol judges watched on from their seats and the audience sang along to the tune. In terms of production, the stage was transformed into a wooded area with a log cabin.

At the conclusion of their performance together, the 2023 Music Mayhem Artists To Watch revealed that they recorded a duet version of “One Day Tonight” and it is available everywhere now.

Noah Thompson also offered the Top 20 contestants advice before exiting the stage.

“Y’all just keep doing your thing and be yourself man that’s all I can tell you. You guys are killing it,” Thompson said.

Noah Thompson is gearing up to release his debut EP, Middle Of God Knows Where, which drops on June 9, 2023.

Following the pair’s performance, Idol judge Luke Bryan took to social media to praise Thompson and HunterGirl, and thank them for returning to Idol.

“Y’all keep taking huge steps every time we see you! @NoahThompsonmu1 and @huntergirlmusic making us judges proud,” Luke Bryan wrote on Twitter.

“One Day Tonight”

Co-written by Jared Griffin, Trannie Anderson, and Brett Sheroky and produced by Jimmy Robbins (Maren Morris, Kelsea Ballerini, Brett Young), “One Day Tonight” finds Thompson putting his signature southern vocals on full display over a pop/country instrumental.

“I fell in love with ‘One Day Tonight’ as soon as I heard it, just by the sound of the melody,” Thompson shared. “The lyrics are beautiful, the song has so much meaning and it is also so catchy! Can’t believe I get to sing it, to be honest, it blows my mind. I hope so many people love it just like I did when I first heard it!”

Throughout the track, the country crooner sings about his girlfriend’s dreams of their future and what their life could be together one day while drinking red wine. The track also details his lover’s dreams of a fairy tale relationship while he hopes he can offer her that life one day.

“She wants a wedding in September / Save up all winter / Spend our summers in a fix ‘er upper in Denver / She wants a girl and a boy / And a old dog named Ole Roy Lord I hope this old boy can give her that life / So go on girl / Pour a glass of wine / And dream aloud, talk about / One day tonight,” Thompson sings on the track’s chorus.

American Idol airs every Sunday and Monday at 8/7c on ABC.
