Luke Combs performed a cover of an Eric Church album cut during a recent home state concert!

The country superstar covered Church’s “Carolina” as part of his encore during his sold-out Appalachian State Stadium Show on Saturday (Sept. 4), which marked his first-ever headlining stadium show.

Thankfully, a fan at the concert recorded the performance of “Carolina,” which had the entire crowd partaking in a roaring sing-a-long to the fan-favorite Church track.

Ahead of the performance during the show, Combs recalled the moment when his friend Andy Stoker walked into his dorm room and asked him to go see Church in concert.

“After me and my parents moved from Charlotte to Asheville, I stopped listening to country music for a good while. There was something about it that didn’t make me feel something in here,” Combs told the capacity crowd of 32,000. “And then my second semester at Appalachian State they transferred me to Dalton residence hall on the other side of campus.

He continued, “And I remember sitting in my dorm room and a friend of mine who I’m sure is here tonight – I actually gave him tickets so I know he’s here tonight – his name’s Andy Stoker, he’s from Newton-Conover, North Carolina. He walked into my room and he said ‘Hey, I got this guy that I think you would like. He’s playing a show at Legends tonight and his name is Eric Church.’ If Andy Stoker doesn’t walk into my room on the third floor of Dalton residence hall in 2009, this show doesn’t happen tonight.”

Previously, Combs has detailed how much Church means to him and even went as far as saying “without him there is no me” during the 2020 CMA Awards. He also recently told Steve Austin that hearing an Eric Church album is what initially influenced his country music career and after listening to it, “that’s where the fire caught spark.”

“Carolina” appears on Church’s second studio album of the same name and was penned solely by Church. The tracks pays tribute to the Church’s home state of North Carolina.
