Shania Twain is marking a new chapter of music. And with that, she is not afraid to make a statement. The country music icon, 57, recently posed partially nude for the cover of her newest single entitled “Waking Up Dreaming.”
The cover art, which she pinned to her Instagram page late last month, shows Twain confidently modeling a pair of technicolored Stiletto-styled boots while shirtless. She uses her arms to cover up her top half as she dons a fashionable buttoned-down satin shirt tied around her waist. To complete her daring look, Twain accessorizes with a beige cowgirl hat and a pair of dangly earrings.
“Every time I get to announce something like this, I get such a rush of adrenaline and nerves. It never gets old… I am super excited to share with you that my new song ‘Waking Up Dreaming’ is coming out this Friday,” Twain, who also uploaded the snap for her Instagram profile picture, captioned the post.
“I’ve spent the last couple of years working away on the new music… on my documentary… on the Vegas residency and it’s been such a creatively fulfilling time for me. I can’t wait for this next chapter and ‘Waking Up Dreaming’ is just the start,” she continued.
Why Did Shania Twain Pose Topless For Her “Waking Up Dreaming” Single Art?
Now, Twain is opening up about the inspiration behind her nearly-naked debut. Speaking with The Sun, as shared by People, Twain revealed that she had the freedom to design her cover art and wanted to send a message out to fans that she is completely secure in her own skin.
“I styled that photograph myself,” Twain told the publication. “It was all about taking off the bra, taking off the shirt, tying the shirt around my waist. This is a statement of being comfortable in my own skin and just being really myself.”
And while she is certain some may disagree with her decisions to relay that message, Twain said, “You have to be strong. I never really get angry with criticism. You can’t please everybody, that’s normal.”
Twain, of course, is no stranger to turning heads with her looks. Back when she first made waves in the ‘90s, she sparked controversy with the music video for her debut single, “What Made You Say That.” Twain discusses her image with the video and the risks she took to get to where she is today in her recently released documentary Not Just a Girl, which is available to stream on Netflix.
And, it sounds like Twain has more potential projects in the works. According to the outlet, she is in talks for a possible “biopic film about herself and a jukebox musical using her songs, à la Mama Mia.”
“Both of those things are possibly in the future,” Twain addressed. “All sorts of things are in the pipeline. I’m writing songs all the time, and the Netflix documentary has been a huge talking point in my life and career. There’s all sorts of things coming up but things I probably can’t talk about right now. But I’ve got a very busy few years ahead of me.”
Twain’s ‘80s-inspired “Waking Up Dreaming,” and the recent music video to match, marks a new era for the singer/songwriter, as it is her first solo single in five years. The tune is also the first taste of what fans can expect from the best-selling female artist in country music since her 2017 Now album.
The Republic Nashville signee shares she is laying down the groundwork for a as-yet-to-be-named upcoming album.
“I’m really excited about cheering people up. This album is very chirpy, and I’m very frank with my lyrics on it, so it’s not a fluffy, lyrical album. It’s a happy album,” Twain said. “I had a very productive songwriting pandemic period and — as much as we were isolated — it was almost like I wanted to cheer myself up, and that just came out in the music. It’s so danceable.”
