Riley Green is headed to television, with the singer to appear in several episodes of the upcoming Yellowstone spinoff Marshals. The 37-year-old country superstar follows in the footsteps of fellow country hitmaker Lainey Wilson, who appeared on Yellowstone as a musician named Abby. In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Green revealed that his character will also have a musical aspect.
Green will appear on Marshals as former Navy SEAL named Garrett, who arrives at the ranch, unexpectedly, hoping to lean on his friends Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) and Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) to help “put the demons of his past to rest.” Apparently, he will also sing on the show, with Green sharing that he gets “to play a little bit on the show.”
“My character, Garrett, happens to play guitar and sing a little bit,” Green said. “I get to play some on the show and it’s going to be cool to see that world intertwine with country music because it’s such a great alignment.”
The 37-year-old added that his character has “a lot of backstory” and “a lot of emotion” and has “been through a lot.” Noting that he has “some really intense scenes,” Green admitted that “it was kind of tough to get into that mode and it took a little while to do it, but once I did, it was something that kind of got easy to fall into.”
He was also a little nervous when he began filming, a feeling he says “it’s been a while” since he’s experienced.
“When you walk on stage, everybody’s there to see me. It’s my show and everybody works for me,” Green explained. “And when you go on a set, nobody works for me and you really got that feeling of like I’m the new kid. So it was cool to feel that it’s a challenge and to feel those nerves. And fortunately I was around some really great people.”
Marshals stars Grimes as Yellowstone‘s Kayce Dutton, who “joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”
Luke Grimes and Riley Green are good friends, and it was Grimes who helped Green score the role on his new show.
“As he was starting his music career, I was kind of trying to help him out in town and we wrote some songs together and it was really just buddies talking,” Green said of Grimes, who is also a country singer preparing to release a new album. “He said, ‘You should do some acting.’ And then little did I know he had a part for me. So flew out here and read for it on Saturday and flew back and started filming on Monday. So it was a quick thing.”
Some of the early scenes Green filmed for Marshals were with his friend, which he noted was a big help in making him feel more comfortable, sharing, “it was so awesome to have him around and for my first few scenes to be with him, just to have that rapport with him was great, really helpful.”
