Megan Moroney made her MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) debut with a show-stopping performance of her heartbreak anthem, “6 Months Later.”
The country star, donning a purple plaid dress, an outfit similar to the single art of the track, delivered a captivating performance of the arena-ready tune on the MTV VMAs Extended Play Stage, presented by Doritos. This marks the first year the stage appears on the main show, as it previously took place during the pre-show telecast. The Extended Play Stage is designed to spotlight first-time nominees, with this year’s lineup featuring Moroney, Bailey Zimmerman, and Lola Young.
“Then I survived/ The Hey Meg I think I want you back/ I’m a couple drinks in thinking it’s my bad/ That I let you walk away and let you go/It’s a tale as old as time I guess/ When you couldn’t care more, I couldn’t care less/ You’re a little too late to the party, heartbreaker/ What doesn’t kill you calls you 6 months later,” Moroney confidently sang on the chorus as she strummed her sparkling silver acoustic guitar, made by DanielxDiamond.
“6 Months Later,” produced Kristian Bush and co-written by Moroney alongside Ben Williams, David “Messy” Mescon and Rob Hatch, marks her second release since her sophomore project, AM I OKAY?, following “You Had To Be There” featuring Kenny Chesney. Both songs are expected to appear on Megan Moroney’s yet-to-be announced third studio album (MM3).
Ahead of her performance, Moroney chatted with the VMAs producers and shared how “happy” she is to represent country music at the show.
“I’m just happy to be here. I think it’s amazing that there’s a country category now at the VMAs. This is my first VMAs, so I’m just happy to be here representing country music,” Moroney, 27, shared. Moroney, a first-time nominee, was nominated for Best Country, a new category at this year’s awards, with her “Am I Okay?” music video.

Earlier in the night, Megan Moroney made history as she took home the award for Best Country for her chart-topping single, “Am I Okay?.” Just before the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards kicked off, the 27-year-old country star stopped to chat with Billboard on the red carpet, moments after winning her first Moon Person.
“That’s crazy. I mean, this is my first VMAs, and I had no expectations going in. So it’s a win and I get to perform later. Expectations are exceeded, we’re going to have a good night, and it’s just really cool to be here. My fans are the best. It’s a fan-voted award, so, it doesn’t surprise me that they voted their tails off,” Megan Moroney, a first-time nominee at the VMAs, told the outlet.
