Willie Nelson’s son Lukas Nelson teamed up with Lainey Wilson on a brand-new duet, titled “More Than Friends,” a tune that is all about having fun and letting loose.
Solely penned by Lukas Nelson, “More Than Friends” shares the idea of exploring a friendship further to see where it goes. Throughout the track, the pair sing of enjoying each other’s company as a couple for just one night by throwing out the rule book of being only friends. They plan to spend the evening having carefree attitudes about their little rendezvous and instead decide that they will worry about their cares tomorrow.
“Forget tomorrow / We can face the music then / But I promise you tonight will never end / If we pretend / We’re more than friends,” Lukas Nelson and Lainey Wilson sing, in harmony, on the chorus.
Nelson Knew Wilson Would Be His Duet Partner on The Track
With Nelson’s tenor vocals and Wilson’s signature country twang on the call-and-response tune, the collaboration makes for a fitting cocktail for listeners. And it turns out Nelson had Wilson in mind when he was picking a duet partner for the song.
“When I wrote ‘More Than Friends,’ I had always envisioned it as a duet,” Nelson shares in a press release. “I am a big fan of Lainey, and she was at the top of my list of artists I wanted to sing with me on this track. When we sent her the song, I was thrilled to hear back that she loved it and wanted to do it.”
Lainey Wilson compared the tune to a modern-day take on Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers’ iconic duet, “Islands In The Stream.”
“‘More Than Friends’ is a modern-day take on the musical, kindred spirits of icons like Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers,” Wilson added. “I’m so honored to be able to work with someone as talented as Lukas. His artistry and storytelling within music is unlike any other.”

The music video for “More Than Friends” also brings the story to life as four friends meet at a bar to dance the night away as a double date. Nelson and Wilson along with Nelson’s longtime band Promise Of The Real (POTR), meanwhile, is featured as the house band for the night at the entertainment venue.
“More Than Friends” Will Appear On Nelson’s New Album, Sticks And Stones
“More Than Friends” arrives ahead of Nelson’s upcoming album, Sticks and Stones, due out on July 14 via 6ACE Records/Thirty Tigers. The track is one of a dozen solely penned and produced by Nelson with POTR. As a whole, the forthcoming collection explores the universal human experiences of love, celebration, longing, and humor.
Of Sticks and Stones, Nelson says, “This album is about celebrating the human connection, joy, and excitement. We went from quiet and introspective on A Few Stars Apart to something big and fun to really showcase the band’s talent and performance. You can listen to the album Sticks and Stones from start to finish and get the songs to dance to and then the quiet, poignant songs. To me, this album is the perfect set list.”
Lukas Nelson Will Soon Embark On A Headlining Tour
This spring, Nelson + POTR will embark on their headlining tour. The trek, which kicks off on April 1 in Charles Town, WV, will make stops in 18 cities. In June, Nelson heads overseas for a nine-night run across the U.K. and Ireland.
