Old Dominion and Megan Moroney have teamed up for an electrifying new duet entitled “Can’t Break Up Now.”
The song, which dropped on Friday (Aug. 18), gives listeners a preview of what to expect from the band’s forthcoming album, Memory Lane, due in the fall.
“Can’t Break Up Now” finds Old Dominion’s lead singer Matthew Ramsey and Moroney taking on the roles of two people stuck in a sour romance that seems to be too tough to get out of. He knows everything about her, down to the color of her coffee, while she has his family on her side, including his mom and the dog.
The pair is at a crossroads, wrestling with the idea of staying together or splitting up, but realize they have too much history and ultimately deem each other irreplaceable.
“So what am I supposed to / Unlisten to every song written / Take you out of every melody / You know my secrets, my demons and I know your weaknesses / All of your doubts and your dreams,” the two artists sing together, questioning what life would look like without their other half. “So we can’t break up now / No we can’t break up now.”

While reasoning why they need to stick it out, Ramsey and Moroney give listeners a vocal showcasing that is bound to be a contender for Collaboration of the Year awards. His smoking tenor paired with her laid-back rasp and stunning low vocal over a piano-driven melody and riveting guitar licks, offers fans a duet that will be remembered for years to come.
Frontman Matthew Ramsey Said Megan Moroney’s Voice Was Perfect For The Tune
Ramsey, who wrote the mid-tempo track years ago alongside Trevor Rosen, Emily Weisband, and Tofer Brown, said he held on to the song waiting for the right voice to come along. And it turns out that voice was Moroney’s.
“We wrote this song years ago, and we’ve been hanging on to it just kind of waiting for the right voice to appear,” Ramsey shared, according to WBWN.com before sharing how the collaboration came together through conversations.
He continued, “We’ve sent text messages back and forth and had many conversations about, maybe this person would be right, maybe this person would be right, and we never could find something that we all were like, ‘You know what, that’s the right voice,’ until Megan Moroney showed up and ‘Tennessee Orange’ became a big hit, and we all became fans along with the rest of the world.”
“Her Voice Is So Honest And Pure”
“Her voice is so honest and pure, and we thought, you know, maybe she would be interested in doing the song with us,” he added. “And to be honest, the demo vocal [that] Emily Weisband [recorded] was so good that it was tough to imagine anyone else doing it until Megan came in and really nailed it.”
“I didn’t write this song, but when it was sent over, I thought the lyrics told a story that we all can relate to,” Moroney, meanwhile, shared in a statement. “The melody was infectious, and it’s not like anything I’ve ever put out, and I’ve been a fan of Old Dominion for a while. I’m really excited to be featured on this!”
