Country/Rap artist Kendall Tucker won’t officially release his brand-new single “Dragging Me Down” and its accompanying music video for the track until Friday (Aug. 25), but lucky readers of Music Mayhem are getting the first look and listen with this exclusive premiere.

Tucker enlisted hitmaker Jelly Roll and chart-topping, heavy metal rockers State Of Mine for the collaborative track, which showcases the Ocala, FL, native’s incredible rap talents. Providing an emotional and motivational message to listeners, the lyrics of “Dragging Me Down” play out like a prayer as it focuses on the perspective of a man, who is doing his best but having trouble getting his head above water.

Faced with bills stacking up, trying to provide for a family, and watching as his dreams go unchased, he leans into his vices but tells himself “I need to stop my gluttonous ways…../ help me find the son and holy ghost.”

For the song, Tucker and Jelly Roll split up the verses, providing the storyline, while State of Mine serves up the chorus, singing, “I’ve been smiling at times on the outside / But what nobody seems to understand / Is how I’m stressin’ all the damn time / I feel like I’m fighting who I am / I just want ‘em to see that this isn’t me / I want to break the chains that lock me down / I just want to believe / I just want to be free / But something just keeps on draggin’ me down / draggin’ me down.”

Tucker opened up about the track saying, “There’s a lot of people in this world hurting. Everyone has their own demons they battle. Some people show it while others try to cover it up with a smile.”

“Jelly Roll Continues To Bring Hope To Hurting People”

He added that he felt Jelly Roll was the perfect candidate for the track since the formerly incarcerated “Save Me” singer has been open about his own struggles with mental health and addiction. On top of that Jelly Roll has used his platform to raise awareness and funds for at-risk youth across the country and to help inspire folks who have been down the same roads as he has.

“I couldn’t think of a better artist than Jelly Roll to have on this song. Jelly continues to bring hope to hurting people,” Tucker, who has recorded and worked with names such as Colt Ford, Bubba Sparxx, Uncle Kracker, Craig Campbell, and many more, shared. “With this collaboration of myself, Jelly Roll, and State of Mine, we just want the people to know that they are not alone. You may feel like you’re getting dragged down, but don’t give up, you’ll get through this.”

“Dragging Me Down” Music Video Brings The Song’s Message To Life

The video, which is directed and edited by Drake Whelton (White Knuckle Films), brings the song’s message to life as it features a male character struggling with a drug addiction while dealing with work and marital issues.

The visual effort offers viewers the outcome before rewinding back to what took place at the beginning of the day. Separate scenes of the clip, meanwhile, feature Tucker and State of Mine performing the song with a high dose of energy.

“I’m excited to release this video to the world!” Tucker told Music Mayhem. “I believe it will help a lot of people who are going through hard times. I couldn’t have asked for better artists to feature on this track. Jelly Roll and State of Mine added so much to this song, and I’m forever grateful to have worked with both artists. This was a fun video to shoot. From the storyline, to the rain scene to the full band scenes, I think it pulls you in when you watch the video. Big thank you to Drew Jacobs and Drake Whelton with White Knuckle Films for bringing the vision to life.”

“Dragging Me Down” follows Tucker’s previous single, “Stickup,” featuring MYXED and Three Six Mafia co-founder Project. Both tracks set the tone for what lies ahead for Tucker as he prepares to release his forthcoming project later this year.
