Kelly Clarkson is well known for covering other artists’ songs on her popular “Kellyoke” segments on her daytime talk show program, The Kelly Clarkson Show. But, on a recent episode of the series, the three-time Grammy winner made a bold move that has some folks now questioning if she was throwing a dig at her ex.

On a Thursday (March 30), installment of the daytime talk show, Clarkson performed a stunning rendition of GAYLE’s revenge tune “ABCDEFU.” But she made sure to make it her own. Taking things up a notch, Clarkson changed a few of the lyrics that seemed to hint at her own personal life experience of a past relationship.

The original song lyrics go, “Fu** you and your mom and your sister and your job / And your broke-a** car and that shit you call art.”

However, when Clarkson got a hold of the tune, she modified the lyrics to instead say: “Fu** you and your dad and the fact that you got half / and my broken heart / turn that s—t into art.”

Clarkson Recently Divorced From Ex-Husband Brandon Blackstock

Those familiar with Clarkson’s backstory know that she once married and then later divorced her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock, who was also her former manager. Blackstock’s father Narvel Blackstock was formerly married to legendary country singer Reba McEntire and is also the founder of the recording studio and music management company Starstruck.

Clarkson filed for divorce from Blackstock in June 2020 after nearly seven years of marriage. According to court documents per Yahoo! Entertainment, the pair cited “irreconcilable differences” in their divorce papers.

In March of 2022, the two reached a divorce settlement that found the “Catch My Breath” songstress paying Blackstock a one-time amount of $1.3 million. She is also required to make monthly payments of $115,000 in spousal support until Jan. 31 2024, and $46,500 monthly payments in child support for their two kids, River Rose and Remington Alexander. Clarkson also received primary custody of the two children.

While it’s unclear whether or not Clarkson was actually referring to her ex-husband in her rendition of “ABCDEFU,” it’s no question GAYLE appreciated her version of the song. After catching Clarkson’s take on the tune, GAYLE took to TikTok, sharing her reaction to the performance.

This clip below shows GAYLE covering her face with her hand in disbelief as she excitedly yells, “Oh! Kelly Clarkson covered my song!”

GAYLE then lets out an enthusiastic scream as she continues to view the original American Idol winner slaying the song.

“The lyrics change. I can’t,” GAYLE simply writes below the video post.

Clarkson’s latest “Kellyoke” segment also found fans picking apart the updated lyrics, with one person writing “Oh she real mad at Br*ndon!!”

“‘The fact that you got half’ — yesss drag him!!!” Another person commented on the performance – this time on YouTube. “My broken heart, turn that bullsh*t into art — new album coming!”

Kelly Clarkson Recently Announced Her New Album

Furthermore, at least one part of the latter’s comment has been confirmed. Clarkson is, indeed, gearing up to drop her next album and follow up to 2017’s Meaning of Life. The project release date of the album has not yet been announced, but the title will be Chemistry. The album will walk listeners through Clarkson’s process of navigating the aftermath of her divorce and her new adjustment to life as a single mom.

“I was trying to find a word, it might be one of the songs on the album, but I was trying to find a word that really described the whole thing,” Clarkson said while announcing the project on Sunday (March 26), according to Billboard. “I didn’t want everybody to think I was just coming out with some ‘I’m angry,’ ‘I’m sad’ — just one or two emotions. This album is definitely the arc of an entire relationship.”
