Jessica Simpson and her family relocated from Los Angeles to Nashville so that the “I Wanna Love You Forever” singer can reboot her music career as she prepares to release new music and return to the road.

Temporarily Relocated To Nashville

The singer and husband Eric Johnson share son Ace, 10, and daughters Maxwell, 11, and Birdie, 4. According to Simpson, the more laid-back nature of Nashville had a positive effect on her that her whole family could see.

“Being in Nashville, even my kids are like, ‘You laugh the whole time. You’re so happy,’” she told E! News. “It’s because I’m not on guard. I’m with a lot of like-minded people. It’s not about the celebrities—it’s really about the music and the heart and the conversation.”

Renting A Home Has Been A “Hilarious Experience”

The family has been renting a home in the area, which Simpson noted has been “a hilarious experience.”

“I used thumb tacks to hang these $40 curtains up so I wouldn’t wake up with the sun,” she said. “I put together a TV with a butter knife [and] I was looking for a screwdriver, but I went to the wrong place [and] I went to Walgreens, I got lip gloss instead.”

Being in Music City has also inspired Jessica Simpson to continue her planned return to music. The 43-year-old most recently released a cover of Nothing But Thieves’ song “Particles” in 2021. In 2020, she included six songs in the audiobook for her memoir, Open Book, her first new songs since 2010’s Happy Christmas.

“I’m not nervous at all, but if you were to ask me two years ago when I was talking about coming back to music, I was frightened,” she admitted. “But now, I know exactly what I want.”

She continued, “I’m building my own platform. I’m doing it for the first time—the way I would—without a label telling me I need to do this song or use this producer. It’s all me.”

“Definitely” New Music On The Way

Jessica Simpson further opened up about returning to her music career while speaking with Extra, sharing that there is “definitely” new music on the way.

“It gives me chills thinking about it,” she said of returning to the recording studio. “I know that whenever I open this big old trap of mine, a lot is going to come out and it’s going to be really powerful. And I finally feel connected enough to my purpose in music and I know exactly what it is I want to do.”

Took A Break To Raise Their Children

The 43-year-old noted that now feels like the right time for her to return to music after raising her children for the past decade and being present for them.

“I really wanted my kids to be raised as normal as possible in the first 10 years,” she explained. “I didn’t want to be on the road all the time [and] I didn’t want to be gone all the time, and I feel like I’ve given that to them.”

Simpson also hinted that she’ll be touring “in the next year.”

Says Her Kids Know That “I’m Living My Dream”

The “With You” singer echoed her sentiment of wanting to be there for her kids before getting back into music during an interview with PEOPLE.

“I was too nervous to go back into other careers that are my passion until I felt like they were confident enough in school and in life before I would step foot on stage,” she said. “It’s crazy, the responsibility to feel as a parent, but really I look to them and they teach me so much.”

With her kids by her side, Simpson shared that returning to her music career is “very exciting” and that her children are “very excited” for their mom.

“They know that I’m living my dream and that that’s what I was born to do,” she said. “And so to have them experience that with me is going to be really beautiful.”
