It’s no question that Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan have dominated the country radio scene for nearly two decades. They’ve sold out massive arena tours and earned countless No. 1 hits. But long before becoming big-time country superstars, the pair sparked a unique friendship — and a little friendly rivalry — all thanks to a booking at a radio station.
During an interview with Katie & Company’s Katie Neal, Aldean was asked if he could recall the first time he ever met Bryan. To her surprise, he didn’t hesitate.
“I met him the first time I ever headlined,” Aldean said, telling the story. “There’s a DVD, our first DVD thing that we ever made back in the day was Wide Open Live and More. It was a live concert that we did in Knoxville, Tennessee.”
That milestone moment turned out to be even more meaningful than he realized.
“That day, I went over to the radio station there in Knoxville to do an interview. And as I’m walking in, Luke’s walking out,” the Macon, Georgia, native remembered, adding that the “Country Girl (Shake It For Me)” hitmaker was scheduled to play the station’s after-party at a local bar following his show. “So he was promoting his show. I was there promoting my show, and we had heard about each other.”
At the time, both rising stars were paying their dues in the same Southern club circuit. Now, with years of success behind them, they can laugh about those early days, a shared climb that makes them kindred spirits with strikingly similar career trajectories.
“We used to play the same clubs, and we joke about it all the time,” Aldean shared of the two pals, who, in their early days, even turned their competition into a game. “It’s like going into a bar somewhere and ripping his poster down and putting my poster on the wall, and he would do the same thing.”

They knew how to hustle, and as their names began circulating through word of mouth, they were well aware of each other. They just hadn’t officially shaken hands until that day in Knoxville. “We were aware of each other and who each other was, but we had never met,” Aldean confirmed. “And I met him that day in the radio station, talked to him, sat there in the lobby, and talked to him for 10 minutes. And that was the first time I met him.”
Still, it wasn’t until later that their friendship truly formed. “I went on a deer hunting trip,” Aldean said, looking back — a story he also shared during the Nashville Lifestyles event celebrating his cover story and new album, Songs About Us, due out in April. “We had some mutual friends, and we ended up in the same deer camp together. And that was really where we kind of hit it off, became friends.”
Soon after, Aldean invited Bryan to open shows for him, and the two toured together for the next two years. “That was when we kind of got to be friends,” Aldean noted of their long history.
What makes their story unique is the timing. As Aldean’s career began skyrocketing, Bryan had a front-row seat.
“My career was exploding, and then a couple of years later, his was exploding while he was on the road with me,” Aldean said. “We kind of got to be there for each other and witness that. He watched it happen for me. And a couple of years later, I watched it happen for him.”

Despite the pressures of fame, touring, and navigating life in the spotlight, their shared history became an anchor.
“There’s not a lot of people who have been through a lot of the same stuff that we have, on the level that we have,” Aldean acknowledged of the two, who grew up in an industry where competition runs high. “He’s always been somebody that I can pick up the phone and call, that I know he’s been there, done that, like I have.” He continued, “We can kind of lean on each other for advice or different things like that. And so it’s been a really cool friendship over the years.”
Bringing them full circle even further, Bryan is a guest vocalist on Aldean’s upcoming album, Songs About Us. The pair join forces on the album’s title track, written by Kurt Allison, Tully Kennedy, John Edwards, and John Morgan. In addition, the longtime friends and collaborators will reunite this spring as co-headliners for Live Between the Hedges, a concert series presented by Pruitt Health.

The Georgia natives and superstars made the announcement on the University of Georgia campus ahead of a Georgia Bulldogs vs. Alabama Crimson Tide matchup. The joint headlining show will mark the first concert at the stadium since 2013, when Aldean headlined his Night Train Tour with Bryan as his opening act. Supporting acts for the upcoming Between the Hedges concert at Dooley Field include Lauren Alaina, Zach Top, DJ Rock, and Dee Jay Silver. Between the Hedges takes place at Sanford Stadium on April 25, 2026.
