Jake Owen is mourning the loss of his dog Slash, who passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 10.

The country superstar shared sad news with fans on Sunday (July 11) via his social media.

“I lost one of my best friends last night unexpectedly..” Owen explained in the caption of an Instagram post, that included a series of photos of his dog. “The drs said his stomach had “flipped” and even with emergency surgery, it wasn’t enough to save him…I didn’t even make it home in time to say goodbye.”

Owen continued to share that Slash was his youngest German Shepherd, one of the best dogs and always wanted to be by his side.

“Slash was my youngest German Shepherd and the sweetest most loving dog I’ve ever had,” the country hitmaker added. “He was more like a human than a dog. While my other pups would run free across the farm, Slash just wanted to be by my side. Losing a dog is like losing a family member. It was hard for me to even put this post together and share. Go love on your family. Go love on your dogs. See ya up there in Slashy. Love ya buddy. 😢”

Several country artists shared their condolences with the singer via the comments, including Chris Lane, Jon Pardi, Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild, Travis Denning, Chuck Wicks and more.

Man I am so sorry. I know what that feeling is like. Sending love yall’s way,” Denning commented.

“Sorry bud! That’s a tough one,” Pardi added.

“So sorry buddy.. they’re for sure family members 😢,” Wicks shared, while Lane and Fairchild both wrote “So sorry.”

The country superstar and “Made For You” singer is currently on the road, touring, and last night he performed at Lake Front Music Festival in Wisconsin.
