The Voice winner Jake Hoot and his longtime girlfriend Brittney Nicole Hoyt are now engaged.

People confirmed the news on Tuesday (Sept. 29), the engagement took place during their hometown trip to Phoenix, Arizona on Sept. 20. He proposed to Hoyt in front of her family and his mother.

″I knew how important being around family was to Britt, and with her birthday coming up, I knew it would be the perfect time to do it!″ he told PEOPLE. ″She’s one of seven, so arranging everyone to fly in and it still be a surprise was tough, but we all coordinated how it would happen, and it went off without a hitch!″

″She lost it! I had to keep her moving forward because she was crying and trying to fall down on me!″ Hoot recalls. ″Then after I popped the question, we were both so emotional that I almost had to wrestle her arm to put the ring on her hand!”

Hoyt shared her excitement on Instagram following the engagement saying: “My whole life I’ve prayed for my husband. The man I knew that God would hand craft just for me. I’ve dreamt a lot about what it would look like and feel like, but never in my wildest dreams did I think it could be this good, this fun, this easy, this filled with peace and joy,” she wrote. “@jake.hoot.music you are far more than I ever dreamt of! I could not be more thrilled to get to spend the rest of my life loving you! Cheers to forever with you, my very best friend!”
