Did you know that Morgan Wallen paid tribute to The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on two of his songs, including “Whatcha Know ‘Bout That” and “Whatcha Think Of Country Now.”
Wallen name-dropped the band and sampled their well-known song, “Fishin’ In The Dark” on “Whatcha Know ‘Bout That,” which appears on his 2018 album If I Know Me.
“And that Nitty Gritty song comes on / on your phone / ‘Cause that’s my ringtone,” he sings on the track.
Likewise, Wallen mentions the band on his song, “Whatcha Think Of Country Now,” a track from his record-breaking sophomore project, Dangerous: The Double Album.
“Got to do a little fishin’ in the dark,” he sings, referencing the band’s popular song.
Wallen also previously discussed what it was like to sample the band’s song, “Fishin’ In The Dark” on “Whatcha Know ‘Bout That” back in 2018 on Ty, Kelly, and Chuck‘s morning show.
“That was an interesting song to get to come to pass, I guess you would say,” Wallen told the hosts. “The day before our album was, uh, supposed to be turned in we hadn’t got that approved yet and we kinda had to go scrambling around finding who we needed to call, you know? And, uh, it just so happened my manager had a name in his phone and it was a very unique name and her last name was Photoglo so we looked up the writers of the song, you know and all that stuff, and the guy’s last name was Photoglo and it ended up like being his wife that [my manager] knew,” he explained.
“We got a hold of them and they ended approving it and that’s why I think there’s probably like seven or eight writers on the song, but that’s just because we, you know, we wanted to give them credit.”
“It’s such a great song,” Kelly told Wallen after he’d finished sharing how he and his team had gotten the song approved.
The country hitmaker performed “Whatcha Know ‘Bout That” live back in 2018 in Jacksonville, Florida. He also performed “Whatcha Think Of Country Now” recently during a concert in Southaven, Mississippi.
Wallen is currently performing on his Dangerous Tour and has hinted at a possible stadium tour in the future. In addition, he recently shared that already has 12 songs finished for his next project.
