Eric Church surprised fans on Friday (Aug. 28) with a brand new song entitled “Crazyland.”
“Crazyland / Since you said goodbye / It’s been crazy man / Lunatics, liars and it also rains / Waiting on her leaving to come back again / Here in Crazyland / Talking to yourself is the only plan / Giving up on your last give a damn / Here in Crazyland,” sings Church.
Church told Bobby Bones that this is the song that came to him in a dream and he woke up and wrote down the chorus.
“One of the last songs we recorded, this is weird and I feel like you’re getting inside information but, I actually dreamed the chorus of the song, and I woke up and I wrote it down, and then I ended up writing the rest of the song to the chorus,” Church told Bobby Bones. “I guess when you get to a creative point, you get in the groove like that. I was crazy at the time, so, you know.”
The song details what seems like a small town dive bar full of some interesting people that all have their own unique problems and that are doing something different in the bar. However, the song seems to revolve around the new guy that is introduced to the interesting people as Mad Hatter during the opening verse of the track. If you have ever been to a small town, not a main city, and went into a bar you will know exactly what Church is singing about.
“As a songwriter you always have that moment when a song is born and then you have two months or three months before you get in the studio and you bring that thing to life. And I just thought that the feeling and the experience of that is something that we underestimate,” Church explained. “So I wanted to, this time, strip all of that down and when the song is born, whatever those things are in the atmosphere that make it turn into something magical, I wanted to try to grab that.”
“Crazyland” marks the third song from his upcoming album, which details have not yet been revealed. It follows behind his already released songs, “Stick That In Your Country Song” and “Bad Mother Trucker.” The upcoming album will be the follow-up to his 2018 record, Desperate Man.
