Taco Bell announced that it would be bringing back its fan-favorite Mexican Pizza on April 18 to the joy of many loyal customers, including country singer, Dolly Parton.
The chain restaurant made the announcement via a press release, sharing that loyal customers signed a Change.org petition–which garnered over 200K+ signatures–asking for the popular menu item to make a comeback. Singer Doja Cat also got involved, according to the release. The singer was so passionate about Taco Bell bringing back its Mexican pizza that she actually wrote a song about it and posted it to TikTok.
The singer’s plea worked, as Taco Bell indicated via the same press release that its Mexican Pizza will again be available to customers on May 19, with loyalty members getting early menu access two days sooner than that on May 17. The early access promotion applies only to loyalty members ordering via the Taco Bell mobile app for in-store or drive-thru pickup at U.S. locations only, according to the release.
In addition, Taco Bell customers can order the Mexican Pizza via DoorDash beginning on May 19. The menu item can be ordered exclusively via DoorDash through May 26, before Taco Bell plans to expand to other delivery platforms on May 27.
Mark King, the CEO of Taco Bell reacted to the popular menu item making a comeback, saying, “Our menu is full of fan-favorites, but the Mexican Pizza is at the top of that list. From its flashy introduction to menus in 1985 as ‘Pizzazz Pizza’ to its inspiration behind the creation of infamous jingles, Mexican Pizza has a long history with the brand and I’m glad we could give fans what they crave and bring our classic Mexican Pizza back home where it belongs.”
The Mexican Pizza is a customizable item, making it popular with both meat-eaters and vegetarians. The item is typically made up of “two crispy floured shells, layered with beef, pizza sauce, seasoned beef, tomatoes, and a melted three cheese blend,” according to the release. For vegetarians, the item is available without seasoned beef.
Among those who are excited about the popular item’s comeback is Dolly Parton.
While the country singer has not yet shared her reaction to the news via social media, she’s previously said she thought Taco Bell should bring back the Mexican Pizza.
Parton also shared that she enjoys going to fast food restaurants with her husband and will stop by Taco Bell if she’s craving tacos.
“I like soft-shell tacos,” she said. “I like the others, but they fall apart so bad, especially if you’re riding around. So I always get a Taco Supreme, with the sour cream and all that, in the soft shell. I love that.”
“I get an order of rice and beans,” she later added, explaining that she opts for mild sauce. “I don’t like to get it too hot and ruin everything,” she said.
Parton released her latest album, Run, Rose, Run on March 4. The album is a companion to her James Patterson co-authored novel of the same name. The novel, which is being adapted to a film by actress Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine production company, will star Parton. She’s also set to co-produce the film.
Parton also voiced the character of Ruthanna Ryder in the audiobook version of the novel and recruited Kelsea Ballerini to voice AnnieLee Keyes.
Taco Bell pulled its Mexican Pizza from menus back in 2020. The restaurant chain announced that, in addition to the U.S., the popular menu item would also return to Aruba, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic.
On Monday, May 9, Parton revealed that she has partnered with Taco Bell to release Mexican Pizza: The Musical, a musical honoring the return of the Mexican Pizza that will star Parton, Doja Cat, Victor Kunda and more. Written by Hannah Friedman and with music by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Mexican Pizza: The Musical will feature original music to spotlight the brand’s biggest fans and more.
