Dawes delivered a powerful and heartfelt performance at the 2025 GRAMMYs to honor the people of Los Angeles and the communities affected by the recent wildfires.
The folk rock band opened the show with an emotional rendition of Randy Newman’s iconic “I Love L.A.,” joined by an all-star ensemble of GRAMMY® performers, including Brad Paisley, Brittany Howard, John Legend, Sheryl Crow, and St. Vincent. Their surprise performance at Music’s Biggest Night® took place during the live GRAMMYs broadcast at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles and was met with a massive standing ovation from the audience.
The performance was especially poignant for Dawes’ lead singer Taylor Goldsmith and drummer Griffin Goldsmith, both of whom were directly impacted by the fires. Taylor lost his home studio and much of the band’s equipment, while Griffin’s home in Altadena was destroyed in the Eaton Fire. Their emotional tribute not only resonated with the crowd but also added a personal touch to the evening.
“It’s Impossible to express how much we’re feeling right now. We’ve lost everything. 8 years of memories made in our house. 20 years of gear,” Goldsmith shared on the group’s social media earlier this year. “My wife was applying the finishing touches to the nursery for our baby boy, who’s due in a few weeks. She had, throughout the years, poured her heart and soul into making the property a literal piece of paradise. Anyone who had the chance to visit can attest. We often would say to each other, ‘I want to live together in this house for the rest of our lives’. We had convinced our whole family and closest friends to join us in Altadena. Our parents were around the corner. They lost their house as well. Taylor and Mandy are just down the street. Kit’s best childhood best friend Chelsey and her husband Michael live about six blocks away. Wylie and his wife Clara are two blocks from us. Our first crew member and very old friend, Jake, and his wife Andy are just down the street. All of these houses are gone. The thing we mourn the most is the loss of the community.”
Dawes’ moment at the GRAMMYs joins an illustrious list of artists who have opened the awards show over the years, including Beyoncé, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift, and U2.
