Daughtry and Halestorm’s frontwoman Lzzy Hale have joined forces to honor the legendary rock group, Journey, with a cover of their iconic hit “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” in celebration of the tune’s 40th anniversary.
On Thursday (Jan. 5), Chris Daughtry and Hale released the epic cover of one of Journey’s most well-known hits. The cover comes 40 years to the day of the original song’s release, which was on January 5, 1983.
“Someday love will find you / Break those chains that bind you / One night will remind you / How we touched and went our separate ways / If he ever hurts you / True love won’t desert you / You know I still love you / Though we touched and went our separate ways,” Daughtry and Hale sing on the chorus.

“Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” was released by Journey as a single on January 5, 1983. The tune appears on Journey’s eighth studio album, Frontiers. The rock anthem peaked at No. 8 for six consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Top Tracks chart upon release.
The song also appeared in several TV shows and films, including Tron: Legacy, and more recently season 4 of Netflix’s Stranger Things.
“I’ve always loved the song and I was wanting to do a classic cover and my wife and I were watching the Stranger Things season finale and there’s this incredibly intense scene and ‘Separate Ways’ was a big part of this scene,” Daughtry explained in a press release. The Stranger Things scene quickly sparked the idea in Daughtry’s head to cover the classic smash.

“It was so moving just the way it was used, it felt so cool and epic and I was immediately like “THIS is the one! We have to cover this song.” Daughtry added. “ “Then I was like ‘how can we make this extra special? What if it was a duet? What if we got LZZY on it!!??’ Needless to say I was pumped she said yes and I absolutely love how it turned out.”
Hale said that her and Daughtry have been wanting to collaborate for years and thought this would be the perfect duet as they bonded over their love for Journey.
“Chris Daughtry and I have been threatening to unleash a duet for years. What better way to do that than by paying tribute to one of our mutual influences…. JOURNEY!” Hale shared. “This song is not only part of the Stranger Things soundtrack, but has been my go-to for karaoke for as long as I can remember! I’m so honored to have been a part of this and I hope it makes you smile as big as I did while recording it!”
Daughtry’s “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” cover marks the rock band’s first new music since the release of his first-ever independent project, Dearly Beloved, released on September 17, 2021. The album features 13 tracks, including “World On Fire,” “Heavy Is The Crown,” “Lioness,” and more.
Additionally, Daughtry will soon head overseas to embark on a European tour, which kicks off in Norwich, United Kingdom at UEA LCR Norwich. The tour runs through March 27, where the trek will wrap up in London, United Kingdom at Royal Albert Hall.
