Corey Kent reacted to hearing his song, “Wild As Her” on the radio for the first time ever in a video he posted to Instagram on Apr. 29.
Kent, who was a contestant on Season 8 of The Voice on Team Blake Shelton was in the studio with some friends when he heard his song on the radio for the first time. Kent, who is a resident of north Texas, got to hear his song on the radio in the Dallas-Fort Worth area of the state.
“We’re on the radio, boys!” Kent said enthusiastically, before clinking glasses in a “cheers” with his friends.
Kent released the song back in March and it’s been “flying off the charts” since, the radio announcer in Kent’s reaction video can be heard saying.
While Kent is a songwriter himself, he didn’t pen “Wild As Her.” The song was written by country singer Morgan Wallen, Brett Tyler, and Kelly Archer. In addition, Wallen sang the demo for the song.
Kent reacted to Wallen writing the track via Everything Nash.
“I’m very picky when it comes to outside songs,” Kent told the outlet. “For a long time. I knew what I wasn’t, and the hardest part was transitioning from what I know I’m not to knowing what I am, what I want to say, and what I wouldn’t say, what aligns with my brand and what doesn’t align with my brand, and getting to the point where I could filter songs through those lenses.”
“Songwriting-wise, [Morgan Wallen] is one of my favorites that’s in the game currently, and is great at what he does and he didn’t cut this song,” he continued. “I was kind of surprised, because it’s right up his alley too. But hearing Morgan’s voice on it, knowing that it aligned with my brand, knowing that my team was jumping up and down about this song — they were like, ‘Man, you’ve gotta sing this song. Your voice would be incredible on this.’”
In addition, Kent shared that recording the song after hearing Wallen sing the demo was a “fun challenge.”
Kent previously heard his song, “Wild As Her” on XM Radio, sharing a video to Instagram of him listening to the radio in his car.
Kent is currently on the road, with his next show taking place on May 27 in Grand Junction, Colorado at Warehouse 25sixty-five Kitchen + Bar.
Kent grew up touring as the lead singer of a successful Oklahoma band. Once, when Kent attended a Willie Nelson concert, he held up a sign saying it was his dream to duet with the “On The Road Again” singer. Nelson noticed the sign and invited Kent on stage, where the pair then sang “Milk Cow Blues.”
