Johnson’s performance of the iconic Vince Gill track was filmed in partnership between Grand Ole Opry and Circle Network, as part of Opry Live: Opry Loves the ’90s, which aired on Circle Network in celebration of one of the most beloved decades in country music.
“I feel like the ‘90s is one of the greatest eras of country music there’s ever been,” Johnson shared from the Opry stage. “There’s a man in this town by the name of Tim DuBois. He gave me my first chance, my first publishing deal here in the state of Tennessee. He wrote this song, sung by Mr. Vince Gill, and I’d like to play you my version of it.”
The Texas native went on to deliver a breathtaking cover of the song, putting his vocal range on full display. The audience responded with roaring applause and cheers.
Watch Johnson cover the Vince Gill hit below at the 1 hour, 10 minute mark.
The program showcased each of the artists covering popular ‘90s country hits from artists like Garth Brooks, Patty Loveless, The Chicks, Toby Keith, Vince Gill and more.
The one-hour concert also included an exclusive collaboration of the 1996 No. 1 hit “Strawberry Wine” between Deana Carter and Opry NextStage artist BRELAND.
