Chris Young has been in the music business for nearly two decades, and the singer has become known for keeping his private life just that.
Why Does Chris Young Keep His Personal Life Private?
“I would go as far [as] to use ‘opposed,’” he recently shared. “I don’t talk about my personal life [and] I keep that separate. And some people do and some people don’t. I do.”
That extends to Young’s latest single, “Looking For You,” which was released in January. Written by Young with Chris DeStefano, Emily Weisband and James McNair, the song is all about meeting that special person when you least expect it.
“I’ll just be blunt. I didn’t write this about anybody,” Young said, though he revealed that he has had the experience himself.
“That being said, I’ve been in this situation before where I was just like, ‘I’m just going to be single.’ And then somebody walks in with a friend of a friend and I’m just like, ‘Holy crap. Who is that? Who is she?’ That 1,000% has happened to me before,” he recalled. “I can remember one specific instance in my brain.”
Doesn’t Reveal Who His Songs Are About
Though he doesn’t ever disclose who his songs were inspired by, Young does utilize his life experience when he’s in the writing room.
“I will say, yeah, there’s totally times where a relationship or a situation I’ve been in influenced my songs, and I think that’s important because it comes from a place of realism. I can sing it and mean it,” he told Music Mayhem and other media outlets earlier this year.
Speaking about “Looking for You” specifically, the Tennessee native noted that it “actually just came from a place of, you know, sometimes you’re looking for love and can’t find it. Then sometimes you’re like, I give up and it just smacks you in the face like a freight train outta nowhere.”
“I think a lot of people have been through that before where they just see somebody walk in, even if they’re not looking for it, they just find someone and it’s like, this is perfect,” he continued. “So that was kind of the genesis of the idea of this song.”
“Young Love & Saturday Nights”
2023 has been a notable year for Young, who released multiple songs in addition to “Looking for You.” Along with that song in January, Young shared “All Dogs Go to Heaven,” inspired by his pup, Porter, and the summer-ready “Young Love & Saturday Nights” last month.
The new track features David Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel” guitar lick and was written by Jesse Frasure, Ashley Gorley, and Josh Thompson, with Bowie credited as a writer as well.
“I connected with the guitar riff and the lyrics the first time I heard it,” Young told American Songwriter of the small-town celebrating track. “From the girl at the hole in the wall where he plays…to the old trucks, I can really relate to this song, remembering the little bars I used to play in and my beat-up old truck I drove early in my career. I think a lot of people will be able to relate to it.”
Recently Parted Ways With Longtime Manager, Lost 60 Pounds
It was reported this week that Chris Young has parted ways with his management company, The AMG (Artist Management Group), having been one of Rob Beckham’s flagship clients when he launched The AMG in 2019 with Bill Simmons. According to Billboard, Young is currently meeting with potential new managers.
He’s also on a personal journey, recently revealing that he’s lost 60 pounds.
“This year has been dedicated to a lot of work on myself,” he captioned a shirtless Instagram selfie earlier this month. “Music wise AND in the gym. Still not done, but down 60 pounds so yeah… Gonna leave this here #cheers #fitnessmotivation.”
