ABC’s American Idol returned Monday evening (April 5) with an exciting second round of celebrity duets, featuring a number of superstar artists including Josh Groban, Tori Kelly, Jewel, Jason Aldean and more.
Incubus’ Brandon Boyd was also on-hand to duet with top 24 contestant Chayce Beckham, who previously took the stage for a solo performance of Ed Sheeran’s “Afterglow.”
“I watched your audition and the first note that you sang, WOW,” Boyd gushed of Beckham before their duet.
This duet is a full circle moment for Beckham as he grew up listening to Incubus and has always been a big fan of the popular rock band.
Boyd and Beckham performed popular Incubus’ hit song “Drive” which earned them a standing ovation and praise from Idol judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.
“You have to understand something, you have a magical voice when it comes down to being identifiable. So the two of your together was just great,” Richie said. “Now, If I had one thing to say to you we’re out here look at us, engage us, bring us in to that because we want to look at you that’s what makes the performance total.”
“You really remind me of Alejandro and the authenticity and musicianship,” Perry added. “It’s not a singing show, it’s not a karaoke show. This is a real bonafide musical artist and I see you all over Grammys, everywhere, wherever you want to go.”
“You just got this cool thing, it’s just hard to be naturally cool,” Bryan gushed. “On your first song it was like Springsteen cool, but then on the Incubus song man we really heard you kick it up and we haven’t heard that from you yet and now that we know that you have that in your arsenal. I mean, the sky is the limit for you if you can do all of that.”
“Thank you guys so much,” Beckham said with a huge smile on his face.
The 24-year-old singer previously impressed the Idol judges with performances of Kolton Moore & The Clever Few’s “What Brings Life Also Kills,” Tyler Childers’ “Hard Times,” Chris Stapleton’s “You Should Probably Leave” and more.
