Carrie Underwood may be happily married to former NHL hockey player Mike Fisher, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t willing to pack emotion into a song about an ex moving on. The country music powerhouse does just that in her newly-released ballad “Give Her That,” which arrived today (Aug. 11).
In the reflective track, Underwood reminisces on the times she spent with a presumed fictional old flame.
And, while he has moved on with another woman, she notes that, although someone else will be his forever, she was the one who got to experience all of the “firsts” and tokens of affection, including his “mamas necklace” and Lynyrd Skynyrd T-shirt that she still wears to bed.
“Can’t deny she’s got a lot of things that I’ll never have / And that’s a fact / She’s probably perfect in every way, I’ll give her that / But you can’t give her that,” Underwood croons throughout the pre-chorus before jumping into the chorus with: “Old school Skynyrd tee that I still sleep in / Your mama’s necklace, ’cause she wanted me to keep it / Every kiss, every minute that you spent on me / Every memory, you can’t give her those / Wild summer nights where I learned all your secrets / Those “I love you’s” that already fell off your lips / That part of your heart that you gave me and you can’t get back / You can’t give her that.”

Carrie Underwood Explains The Story Behind The Song
While the tune offers a highly-relatable story for fans, it’s Underwood’s superb vocals that make the track that much more of a worthy listen. They shine throughout the slow burner, with the eight-time Grammy Award winner singing over soothing gentle acoustics.
Underwood, who co-wrote “Give Her That” with David Garcia and Lydia Vaughan, opened up about the song on Instagram ahead of the song’s release.
New Album, Denim & Rhinestones (Deluxe Edition)
“‘Give Her That’ is a story about a relationship that is no longer, the person’s kind of moved on and it’s like, ‘I see who you’re with. She’s beautiful, she’s perfect. I’ll give her that. But you can’t give her the time that we spend together,’” Underwood shared. “And I feel like everybody’s kind of got some of that in their lives. If you’re stalking somebody on socials or something like that, they’re like, ‘Oh, they’ve moved on. Of course. Really glad for them. That’s great.’”
She added that while finessing the track in-studio, she and her team cut two takes but ultimately felt the more subdued version made the most sense.
“I feel like the song, when we wrote, ‘Give Her That,’ it kind of had ended up with two versions. One that was super chill, super stripped down, and then one that had a little more of a bassy kind of groove to it, kind of stripped down,” Underwood shared, “That virgin kind of felt more right to the song.”
“Give Her That” serves as the second song from Underwood’s forthcoming deluxe version of her current album, The Denim & Rhinestones. The song follows her current single, “Out of That Truck,” and her recent release, “Take Me Out.” The Denim & Rhinestones deluxe edition is slated for release on September 22. Physical and digital pre-orders for the Sept. 22 deluxe release are available HERE.
Underwood has enjoyed an action-packed schedule throughout the year. She has been opening for Guns N’ Roses on select dates on their World Tour. The trek will bring her to Nashville’s Geodis Park on August 26. Additionally, Underwood’s REFLECTION: The Las Vegas Residency at Resorts World Theatre continues this September.
