Brayden Lape joined forces with his coach Blake Shelton to perform Alan Jackson’s “Chasin’ That Neon Rainbow” during the season 22 finale of NBC’s The Voice on Tuesday (Dec. 13).
Surrounded by neon lights and their names in lights, Lape sang the first verse of the iconic Jackson hit before Shelton took on the second verse and the coach and contestant pairing flawlessly harmonized on the tune’s chorus.
“Singing in the bars and chasing that neon rainbow / Living that honky-tonk dream / ‘Cause all I’ve ever wanted is to pick this guitar and sing / Just trying to be somebody / Just wanna be heard and seen / I’m chasing that neon rainbow / Living that honky-tonk dream,” Shelton and Lape sang on the chorus in perfect harmony.
“Chasin’ That Neon Rainbow” was co-written by Jim McBride and country music icon Alan Jackson, who recorded and released September 1990 as the fourth single from Jackson’s first album, Here in the Real World.
“Jim McBride and I were writing together for the first time,” Jackson recalled of the tune’s origin in the album notes. “We were talking about my life in Georgia and the experience of playing the honky tonk circuit. I remembered a radio that my daddy won when I was a young child and how my mama used to sing to my sisters and me. I also remembered how my mama hated for me to play in the bars. All those things set the story in motion, and within a few sessions, my life chasing that neon rainbow was set to music.”
Throughout Season 22 of The Voice, Lape has been a fan-favorite on The Voice since he first took to the NBC studios stage during his blind audition, where he put a country twist on Niall Horan’s “This Town.”
“You have a solid country voice that’s different and unique. You have a future in country music,” Shelton previously gushed of Lape’s talent.
Lape has showcased his voice on the show with covers of Parker McCollum’s “Pretty Heart,” Jordan Davis’ “Buy Dirt,” Kenny Chesney’s “Come Over,” Kane Brown’s “Homesick,” Brett Young’s “In Case You Didn’t Know,” Corey Kent’s “Wild As Her,” Tim McGraw’s “Humble And Kind” and more.
The season 22 finale of NBC’s The Voice aired on Tuesday evening (Dec. 13) at 9/8c on NBC and will air again tomorrow (Dec. 14) on Peacock.
The two-hour finale also featured performances from Kelly Clarkson, Maluma, OneRepublic, Adam Lambert, BRELAND and the season 21 winner of The Voice, Girl Named Tom.
The Voice coaches—Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, Camila Cabello and John Legend—also took to the stage alongside The Voice finalists—Omar Jose Cardona, Brayden Lape, Bryce Leatherwood, Morgan Myles, and bodie.
In addition to performing alongside Team Blake finalists, Shelton also joined Kane Brown to deliver the live debut of their brand-new duet, “Different Man.”
