Over 85,000 fans and Toby Keith’s family honored the late country music icon Toby Keith during the University of Oklahoma Sooners college football game on Friday evening (Aug. 30).

After the third quarter of the Oklahoma Sooners home game against the Temple Owls at Gaylord Family — Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Sooners paid homage to Keith by playing his patriotic anthem, “Courtesy of The Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)” over the stadium’s intercom speakers, which prompted a massive sing-along with the 83,000 fans in attendance.

In a clip posted by Multimedia Sports Journalist Parker Thune from Oklahoma, Toby Keith’s “Courtesy of The Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)” blasted through the stadium speakers. The entire crowd joined in, singing along as the stadium lit up in the Sooners’ signature crimson and cream colors and fireworks burst in high above the Oklahoma Sooners, who were gearing up for the big game in the center of the Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

The Late Country Music Icon’s Family Were On Hand To Kick Off The Tribute

Toby Keith’s wife, Tricia Lucus Keith, daughters Krystal Keith and Shelley Covel Rowland, as well as his granddaughters, all decked out in Oklahoma Sooners’ gear, were on hand to kick off the first tribute of the 2024 football season.

“The only thing my dad loved more than crimson and cream and The University of Oklahoma was his Red, White and Blue,” Krystal Keith shared, before asking the crowd, “y’all sing this along with us, please!”

Toby Keith’s family remained on the field with tears in their eyes and a smile on their faces as the entire stadium belted out the lyrics to Keith’s iconic hit, “Courtesy of The Red, White and Blue (The Angry American).”

University Of Oklahoma Will Keeps Toby Keith’s Legacy Alive With Weekly Honor

The Oklahoma Sooners football team plan to honor the country music legend each home game this season, according to a press release. “The Toby Keith Tribute 3rd/4th quarter break will celebrate the Oklahoma icon, giving 85,000 fans the opportunity to sing along with the legendary Sooner super fan,” the press release reads.

When Did Toby Keith Die?

Toby Keith passed away at the age of 62 years old on February 5, 2024, following a more than two-year battle with stomach cancer. A representative for the country music icon shared the sad news with fans via a statement on his official website and social media profiles.

“Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on February 5th, surrounded by his family” a statement on his official social media read. “He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time.”

The country music singer/songwriter is survived by his wife, Tricia Lucus, as well as his children, Krystal Keith, Shelley Covel Rowland, and Stelen Keith Covel. Keith is also survived by his four grandchildren.
