Billy Ray Cyrus and Firerose may have a 28-year age gap, but they go together “like peanut butter and jelly,” according to Cyrus.

Detailed Their Romance

The engaged pair opened up about their romance after a performance on Good Morning America on August 31, with Cyrus sharing that they have very different backgrounds but fit perfectly together.

“I’m a left-handed, singer-songwriter from Flatwoods, Kentucky, and she’s a trained orchestral musician,” he explained.

Firerose added that their romance “has been a beautiful whirlwind.” “I’m just so grateful that I get to live my dreams every day with the love of my life,” she said.

How Did Billy Ray Cyrus And FIREROSE Meet?

The couple initially met on the set of the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana, which Cyrus starred on with daughter Miley Cyrus, 12 years ago, when Firerose was 22. Cyrus credits his dog, Tex, for their meeting.

“There’s a couple old pine trees on the lot that look like Tennessee,” he told PEOPLE. “Tex and I would go out there in the middle of the day and he’d take care of his business and we’d stretch and I’d think how much I missed Tennessee. On that given day, Firerose came out of the front door. There was almost a moment of, I don’t know, recognition. I was like, ‘This girl’s a star.’”

The pair began chatting when Firerose came over to say hi to Tex.

“She told me she’d had an audition and I said, “Well, I’m sure you got the job.” Cyrus recalled. “I just thought, well, the casting agents, the producers, the writers, they’re all on the floor of where we do Hannah Montana. And I actually said to her, ‘Don’t ever take a strange man up on this offer, but, in this case, Tex will testify that you will be totally safe. I’m going to introduce you to a producer and you can kind of make yourself at home and watch us rehearse and you know, maybe it might lead to a role or just another contact at Disney.’ And so, off me and her and Tex went back to the studio and I think she met a lot of the cast and met the producers, writers. And, in some ways, well, in a lot of ways, we became friends.”

They stayed in touch over the years, with Firerose noting, “Our friendship was so solid over the years.”

Songwriting Partners

In 2020, they became songwriting partners, releasing their first duet, “New Day,” in July 2021. Cyrus praised his fiancée, noting that “She plays all of her own instruments and writes her own songs.” He recalled, “We began sharing music, and it just evolved.”

During that time, Firerose shared that “Billy confided in me a lot of what was going on in his life.” “I was just the best friend I could possibly be, supporting him,” she added.

“There was sickness and death, and hard times,” Cyrus reflected. “All of the sudden, the life that I’ve always known as a touring artist didn’t exist anymore. A moment of so much change. And at the same time, Firerose, who had been such a light of positivity, such a best friend. And then when we began sharing the music, it just evolved more into, as musical soulmates, to soulmates, happy, pure love that to me, I didn’t know could exist. Again, we’re musicians, first and foremost, both of us. And we found this harmony, and this rhythm, this melody to life.”

Split From Tish Cyrus, Began Dating FIREROSE In 2022

After Cyrus split from ex-wife Tish Cyrus in 2022, he asked Firerose to be more than friends, and the two began dating. Firerose moved to Cyrus’s Franklin, Tennessee, farm and the “Achy Breaky Heart” singer confirmed their relationship on Instagram in August 2022 with a selfie of the pair.

“Wishing everyone a brilliant time at the @vmas tonight!” his caption read. “Music changes everything.”

Engaged

Cyrus proposed in August 2022, and the couple sparked engagement rumors in October with another Instagram post featuring Firerose’s ring.

“Billy looked at me and said, ‘Do you, do you wanna marry me?’ And I was just like, ‘Of course I do. I love you,’” Firerose recalled of the proposal, adding that Cyrus didn’t have a ring at the time (she later designed her own). “He said, ‘I love you. I wanna make this official. I wanna be with you forever.’”

The pair released another song, “Time,” in 2022 and their newest song, “Plans” earlier this summer. The romantic track was penned by Diane Warren and reads, “Have you got plans for forever / Do you have ’til the end of time free / Have you got plans for forever / Do you wanna make them with me / ‘Cuz I swear there’s nothing else I’d rather do / Than plan the rest of my life with you.”
