ABC’s American Idol returned Monday evening (April 5) with an exciting second round of celebrity duets, featuring a number of superstar artists including Josh Groban, Tori Kelly, Jewel, Jason Aldean, Incubus’ Brandon Boyd and more.
Incubus’ Brandon Boyd was on-hand to duet with top 24 contestant Casey Bishop, who previously took the stage for a solo performance of Paramore’s “Decode.” Following her stunning performance of Paramore, Boyd joined Bishop for a performance that demanded your attention, bringing rock ‘n roll to the forefront. The Idol judges were thrilled with her vocals but wanted her to own the stage a bit more.
“All I want to know is what is America going to do?” Richie asked. “Because as far as the talent is concerned, we are in abundance and you were one of the special ones in this whole group. You are standing on this stage owning it. Congratulations.”
“I mean, that voice and that attitude and that raw rock, like I wanted to see you throw bows and I want you to like make it a little bit angry. Make that stage your bitch because that’s how your singing,” Perry exclaimed. “You’re singing with grit, you’re singing with teeth and so I want you to embody it next time and I know that there’s going to be a next time.”
“You must listen to Katy and you must trust what she is saying because listen you’re not grasping your potential yet but your voice is so world class and if you will get the persona, the vibe and walk out there and make it what she said because she can get away with saying that,” Bryan added. “I mean you’re a 16-year-old girl trying to bring rock back, so bring it back, you have the voice to do it, you have the look to do it and now get the attitude and bring rock back.”
