Carrie Underwood returns to Sunday Night Football on NBC singing the series’ theme song in the new opening clip on Sunday, September 13.

The 2020-2021 season marks the country superstar’s eighth consecutive year singing the Sunday Night Football theme.

This year’s clip marks the first-ever Sunday Night Football show opening that features user-generated content from fans showcasing their team’s spirit in addition to cameos from NFL’s biggest stars which are also recorded remotely due to the ongoing pandemic. The show opener was produced without extras in a studio or stadium uniquely while also celebrating millions of fans who watch the games.

“We are excited about this year’s new collaboration with Carrie, including scenes in the recording studio, and look forward to uniquely incorporating the game’s great fans,” said Tripp Dixon, creative director of the SNF show open.

“We all want to make each year feel special and unique,” Underwood says. “More than anything, everybody’s just grateful that we get to do this.”

“I think people need Sunday Night Football,” Underwood reflects. “We need that bit of normalcy, even if we’re going about it in a slightly different way.”

The theme song is Joan Jett’s popular track “I Hate Myself for Loving You” re-worked and re-written for the football theme to be called “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night.”

NBC’s Sunday Night Football has been primetime television’s No. 1 program for an unprecedented nine consecutive years.
