Twenty One Pilots’ Josh Dunn and Disney Alum Debby Ryan have officially tied the knot, actually in a secret wedding last New Year’s Eve in Austin, Texas with their friends and family.
Dunn and Ryan got engaged in a New Zealand treehouse in late 2018 during Twenty One Pilots’ tour in New Zealand, a year later the two wedded and only had 28 days to make it happen as they told Vogue in an exclusive interview announcing their surprise wedding.
The couple unveiled the details to their wedding on Thursday (May 21) over a year after their wedding ceremony happened.
In the Vogue interview, Ryan said “We began to flirt with the idea of having a destination party celebrating the new decade, then decided in December to get married [in Austin] on New Year’s Eve, and just keep dancing until after the ball dropped.”
“The time just felt right,” Debby says. A close friend had passed away the previous summer, which changed her outlook. “He was excited that Joshua and I were getting married, and I never doubted that I’d know him through every coming phase of our lives,” Debby explains. “When he passed, it really rocked me and put a lot of things in perspective. It didn’t feel important to wait anymore, to stop being busy, or for things to line up perfectly—intending to do things is not nearly as powerful as doing, as we aren’t promised tomorrow.”
“We didn’t want the ceremony to be in a ballroom,” Debby explains. “It became more and more important to us that the sanctity of the union exist in a reverent place. I think I saw every church in the greater Austin area and narrowed it down to two. Joshua chose the one we went with. The stained glass windows really got me.”
“We wanted it to feel like game night at our place had [turned into] a Gatsby-level dance party,” Debby says. “I searched Google for ‘art deco treehouse’ and ‘goth flowers’ and made a couple of moodboards for tone reference ahead of seeing venues.”
“The ceremony was the perfect balance,” Josh Dun says. “I felt like it was game night at our house, and this was the ultimate game, and boy did I win! I remember every detail from how it felt to be walking down the aisle, to the full body chills I got watching Debby walk down toward me.”
“The advice that I had been given by multiple people was to allow ourselves to soak it all in. My natural instinct is to be nervous and want the whole thing to be over with so we can just enjoy being married, but I decided to take the advice of my friends and enjoy every moment, even the ones where I felt out of my element and uncomfortable, as I always am whenever the attention is on me.”
Their wedding was planned with the help of Alex Moreau of XO Moreau.
